I read in another answer that to solve the problem I had restarting finder may work. Now I need to know how to restart the finder.

You click on the Finder Icon in your Dock, the list of actions will show "Relaunch". That's it.
Go to the apple at the top left click it and then select force quit. A window with a list of the current running applications will appear, select finder and at the bottom there will be a button with the option to 'Restart Finder'
