Mail is unresponsive to clicks - but will quit with mouse clicks

I have a recurring problem with 10.7 Mail on my 2011 MBP

It seems to occur mostly in full screen. The app is running, but not checking mail. Mouse movements work; mouse clicks do not. I can quit with command+q and with the mouse. (file--quit) I can restart and it works again. This last freeze last 14 hours.

I finally just quit

I have the same problem. I have Mail set to run at login. If the last state of the Mail app was full-screen mode, then after a reboot, the Mail app is not clickable. That is, nothing within the Mail window itself accepts a click from the mouse. Can't click on messages, can't click on folders, etc. Arrow keys work for navigating messages and the OS menu bar at the top and the dock accept mouse clicks but not the app itself.

Even changing the state of the app back to normal (from full-screen mode) doesn't help. I need to quit mail and restart it for it to start working correctly. So this really means that before shutting down or rebooting, I have to remember to get out of full-screen mode first.

Strange.

There was another thread related to this that originated with Lion. Upgrading to Mountain Lion seems to make no difference or even make it worse.

It may be related to Classic vs the new view, not occurring in Classic View.

The UI of mail seems to not "see" mouseup events, so clicking something doesn't do anything, or worse still, behaves like a drag... clicking a second time can sometimes initiate the action desired in the first attempt...

It's all very odd, doesn't happen EVERY click, and clearly for some reason doesn't affect all users!

It first appeared for me when moving from Snow Leopard to Lion, so something changed in the Mail code base to cause the problem.

I'l keep investigating...
