I type many archaic spellings, unusual names and words, and the like, and am constantly running afoul of incorrect word completion - usually I spot it, but often enough, I don't, and thus waste time backtracking to correct the mis-correction. I can't seem to find anything in Help about this. I gather this feature is related to the built-in dictionary - I'd be happy to simple get rid of or disable the dictionary itself, if that would do the trick
One further wrinkle though: Safari has its own spelling and grammar checker, which has to be disabled separately - and it's not under Preferences, but in the Edit menu -> Spelling and Grammar.
P.S. I'm not talking about Safari Auto-Fill for completing forms - but rather word completion and correction (where I type, for instance, "witham" (a name) and it gets changed to "withal". I don't usually look at the screen while typing, so don't catch these things when they happen.
Go to System Preferences -> Language & Text -> Text and uncheck "Correct spelling automatically".
