Uninstalling Cocktail

I have the Cocktail utility but never use it. Can I uninstall completely by trashing it and then searching for any remaining fragments in Spotlight and trashing them?
Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of before doing this?

Hmm....

Well, you can probably proceed as you originally suggested, just click and drag cocktail to the trash and empty it, with a spotlight search to root out any stragglers.

But, I'm not following what you said in your last post:

... This message has an uninstall button, but I'm not certain which options to select in the menu it provides.

What message has an uninstall option, and what are the options in the menu it provides? If you give us more information here, we might be able to 'talk" you through uninstalling this way.

I guess you don't have a registered copy of Cocktail and that must explain why the menu options we are seeing are different.

I have the demo version of Cocktail and I've never purchased a licence.

So here's the details. I open Cocktail and get an option to buy message. This has a quit button and an uninstall button. If I quit, I can't get into the Cocktail menu to hit the uninstall. So I'm left with the uninstall from the 'buy me' message.

If I choose uninstall from this source, I must also select among the following check boxes:

Restore default disk settings
Restore default system settings
Restore default network settings
Restore default interface settings

If I select all of these, will all my customising of the system go out of the window ?

Yes. I think that's how it works. The option is to both uninstall the demo program and restore any changes made by it to your system.

You might be able to keep the changes you made to your system and delete Cocktail as well, just by dragging the app to the trash as you first suggested, but I just don't know if that would have any other effects. Plus, you'd no longer have the ability to change any of the customizations you made once the app that made them was deleted.

All of this analysis leads me to one overarching question: why the need to delete Cocktail at all, especially if you've used it to customize your system? It's less than 5 MB of space, and costs only $14.95 (US) to register. If you like it and use it, why not support the people who took the time and effort to develop it by purchasing a license and leave it on your system to customize as you wish?

Glad to help, Alan.

Just so you know, I have a registered version of Cocktail, which I got a while back on the recommendation of a few (really sharp) people who regularly post on these boards, and I have found it to be a real asset and well worth the cost. Plus, I haven't experienced this directly but I've heard that the developer is very responsive to e-mail support questions.
