I am getting an error message "iTunes could not back up the iPad because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPad" has anyone dealt with this issue?

You can try to force a backup by right clicking on the iPad's name on the left side of the iTunes window - while the iPad is connected to your computer and iTunes is open - and select backup from the contextual menu and see if you can get it to work that way. If it backs up, it may sync as well.

You can also delete the backup in iTunes. Launch iTunes on your computer. From the iTunes Heading in the menu at the top of the screen to go>Preferences>Devices>Click on...'s iPad (your iPad's name)>Delete. Quit iTunes. If you do delete the backup, make sure that you do restart the iPad and the computer before you try to sync again.

If that doesn't work, you may have to restore your iPad. You can read this thread.

There's a method of recovering pictures and videos without software, check out this youtube tutorial.
