Where to download new QuickTime 7.7 for Windows?

I'd like to get QuickTime 7.7 (but only because Apple has forced me to use iTunes + QT to use my iPod) BUT..... the Apple download website ATM only offers up the OLD version 7.6.9 (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and http://support.apple.com/kb/DL837), even though this ZDNet blog (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/apple-quicktime-flaws-haunt-windows-users/920 5#comments) and Apple itself (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222) have announced the new version 7.7.

Way to go Apple.......... Fail!

John:

I intentionally avoided installing the "Apple Software Update" component of the iTunes+QuickTime installer package (v10.4 iTunes w/ v7.6.9 QuickTime) by following this procedure: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/the-unofficial-guide-to-installing-itunes-10-with out-bloatware/2390?tag=mantle_skin;content

Now when I attempt to update QuickTime from within QuickTime (7.6.9), or from WinXP Control Panel> QuickTime, it says new version 7.7 is available but it then takes me to webpage http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ that STILL lists version 7.6.9 of QuickTime !!

Thinking that maybe Apple had simply "forgotten" to update the version number on that webpage, I went ahead and downloaded the QT package, but when I unpacked that installer (using WinRAR), I see that indeed the downloaded package itself is indeed v7.6.9.

So at the moment, even though Apple 8/3/2011 announced & QuickTime claims to provide the new v7.7, in fact Apple is serving up old version 7.6.9. > FAIL !

If anyone figures out how/where to actually get v7.7 for Windows (WITHOUT the bloated "Apple Software Updater" component), please post here. Thanks.

I just re-check the QuickTime Player download page today (Aug 6, 2011) at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and it correctly downloaded the v. 7.70.80.34 installation file.

I noticed on the same download page that iTunes v. 10.4 is still being bundled with the old v. 7.69 QuickTime installer. There are a few posts in this forum where people reported that they had problems with their iTunes for Windows after upgrading to QuickTime Player v. 7.70, so please keep this in mind if you run the QuickTime update.

Further to my previous post, I just checked http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ a few minutes ago and it's back to downloading the old v. 7.69.80.9 QuickTime Player.

I have no idea what's going on. When I downloaded v. 7.70.80.34 this morning, the radio button on the download page was clearly labeled as "QuickTime 7.7.0 for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7" and the file properties show that I indeed downloaded the v. 7.70.80.34 installation file.

.... and 30 minutes later, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ is back to downloading the new v. 7.70.80.34 installation file !!!!!! 😕

I have no idea if Apple is responsible for this or if there's something wonky with my public WiFi connection, but I can't see anything in the history of my NIS 2011 security software that would indicate that I'm being re-routed on the Apple website because of an IP address block.

Yesterday thanks to CarolFromHazlet's link to TechSpot (one of my favorite websites, btw) I did get Quicktime v7.7.80.34 installed on my old WinXP box without any problems. And unlike sooooo many other problem threads here at "iTunes for Windows", iTunes 10.4.0.60 runs just fine for me (whew).

As to "... what's going on..." with the Apple download webpage being now reverted back to old QT v7.69.80.9, I can only hazard some guesses- None of which are complimentary to the "Geniuses" at Apple.

A year ago (& earlier), whenever I'd launch (then-current versions) iTunes and/or QuickTime, they would lockout ALL Windows graphical interface functions (mouse freeze, no screen draws, static clock display, etc.), as I reported in this forum -> I never got ANY useful solution from Apple or other users. Fortunately WinXP hadn't crashed & I could still do controlled shutdowns vis keyboard (Start>Shutdown) albeit with NO actions diplayed on scree. For that reason (& several more important reasons), I subsequently did a full reformat + re-install of WinXP (+ the hundreds of Windows updates), re-installed many programs & restored data files, and now that XPSP3 box runs great. That's some consolation for the DAYS I had to spend rebuilding that PC - Thanks alot Apple Geniuses.

Just FYI, users in the Secunia PSI forum are also reporting the same problem downloading the QuickTime 7.70 update from the Apple website in the thread at http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/11075/. I ran a security scan of my PC with my PSI software, and it lists my current QuickTime v. 7.69 as insecure and recommends that I update to v. 7.70.

I checked out the TechSpot link at http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4938-apple-quicktime.html that carolfromhazlet recommended and it worked fine, so I'd suggest either using this TechSpot download or updating from within QuickTime (Help | Update Existing Software...) using the Apple Update Software.

QuickTime 7.7 doesn't break iTunes for Windows, but it does break access to past purchases in the iTunes Store.

Technically it's not QuickTime 7.7 that's the problem, it's the updated Apple Application Support component that gets installed with QuickTime 7.7 (and Safari). There is a way to install just QuickTime without upgrading the component, but I'm not sure if the component has security updates or not.

Hi Morac:

I'm assuming that you are referring to the new Purchased link in the Quick Links section of the iTunes Store that allows iPhone/iPad users who are logged into their iTunes account to transfer purchased apps and e-books between different devices. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone know if the Apple Application Support program is updated if you use the installation file downloaded from the TechSpot site that carolfromhazlet recommended? If I run the Apple Software Updater from within QuickTime (Help | Update Existing Software), the v. 7.70 update is 45 MB, but the installation file downloaded from TechSpot (or directly from the Apple download site, if you can get the correct version) is only 38 MB. I'm wondering if iTunes users only update the Apple Application Support program if they use the Apple Software Updater to update QuickTime.

I haven't updated QuickTime yet and I currently have Apple Application Support v. 1.5.2.

I'm not sure if it does or not. The problem is that I believe some of the security fixes are in Apple Application Support. At least both Safari 5.1 and QuickTime 7.7 install it and they both fix similar security flaws with viewing images and the like.

I have to believe that Apple will fix this by the time iTunes 10.5 comes out. If they don't they might as well stop writing Windows software.
