iSCSI and Lion Server problems?

Is anyone have trouble connecting to iSCSI devices? I upgraded to Lion and my Drobo Elite units were running fine. I installed Lion Server and now they can't connect over Ethernet. (I can still connect via USB to configure them, so they are functional).

I'm thinking Lion Server has shut off some service or port it needs. (Firewall off, uninstalled & reinstalled Drobo dashboard, using DHCP)

You don't really provide enough information to go on.

However I can say that I have seen reports saying that the free GlobalSAN iSCSI client for Mac currently has problems with Lion, whereas the commerical one from ATTO Technology is supposed to work fine with Lion.

Not to be snarky, but what other information is relevant?

You did not detail what iSCSI software you were using. You did not detail whether the client computer connected directly to the Drobo via iSCSI or via an intermediary. You did not say if turning off the Lion server made a difference i.e. reverting to just the Lion clients. There was no error messages listed, version numbers of firmware and software could have been relevant.

I am still unclear as to which iSCSI software you are using. If as a guess you are using GlobalSAN then my explanation may apply. However it seems some people have now been able to use GlobalSAN even though a lot have had problems. It might be worth reading this http://www.snsforums.com/index.php?showtopic=482

I have been using the GlobalSan for a couple of weeks to host a disk for time machine backups, and it has been stable as long as I don't try to disconnect. When I disconnect, my mac hangs completely, so that I need to cycle the power to recover. I am just restarting my mac when I need to disconnect, and it has been fine like that.

The target is on an Ubuntu Linux box.

SUCCESS! I got my Drobo Elite to connect via iSCSI last night. 😍

Here's what I did.

Download Lion Server Admin Tools http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1419

(It's not included in the standard Lion Server install)

Launch it and log the Server Admin app (located in HD/Applications/Server/). Go to Services. Turn Firewall On. Click Save.

Click on Firewall in the left hand column with the green dot. Go to the Advanced tab and turn off everything. Click Save. Then click back on your server name (blue globe in the left hand column). Go back to Services and turn off Firewall.

Reboot your Drobo Elite and launch Drobo Dashboard. After a few moments, mine magically appeared! (My Drobo Elite is using its default network settings. And my Mac Network system pref is set to DHCP)

So even though I had Firewall turned off in the System Preferences, there seems to be some blocked ports that are hidden from the user. The Server Admin app exposed those blocks so I could turn them off. I don't know which particular port Drobo needed, and I'm sure unblocking these ports can make your Lion Server less secure. But I have a trusted small workgroup and internet firewall is handled by my WiFi router.

Hey Darren

Are you having problems keeping your Drobo Elite connected? Even though my method worked initially, I'm having a hard time keeping the Drobo mounted. It keeps randomly disappearing from my Desktop (and Drobo Dashboard). I have to go into the Dashboard, click volumes, and click the "mount" checkbox to get it to reappear.

Hi Navarro (spell checker must have somehow corrected my spelling of your name last time, apologies).

I have had one drop-off yesterday and possiblly another today - though I've not had a chance to investigate it yet.

I'm using Drobo Pro I should add - but the iSCSI target firmware is the same I believe (on the Drobo).

You can connect multiple iSCSI connections to the Elite - have you tried connecting from another machine to see if it stays up on that, while dropping on the Mac?

Oh and when my Drobo dropped off, it just re-appeared again eventually on it's own - I didn't have to mount using Dashboard.

Keep me posted - I'll be back here if I have more information for you.
