hauppauge HD PVR question

I just got the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212 and downloaded the HDPVRCapture program for mac. Works like a charm and couldn't be happier! Only problem is I can't find the right video converting software for that ideal video/audio.

I tried "Smart Converter" from the App Store and it works video quality wise, but audio is below par and I'm too cautious about buying any other video converting software.

Thank you very much!

Any tips or information that may be useful to me, please email me and/or post it here!

Another option is the EyeTV. The latest versions work very well with the Hauppage HD-PVR and allow automated conversion and transfer directly to iTunes. I have it set up on my home server running Lion Server, capturing TV per "Tivoessque" scheduling, and it automatically adds it to iTunes and is served to my multiple appleTVs around the house. Very slick. Very good HD conversion, and sound is good as well.

I also will give a thumbs up to handbrake. I have used it to rip all of my DVDs onto my media server. Great piece of software.

I can't guarantee it would work, but I suspect it would. The issue depends on whether you want to watch live HD TV real time. If you are using EyeTV then you can record TV without having a window open showing the actual video. This how my system routinely runs since it is on an entertainment center in the basement and doesn't have the projector it's connected to open very often. System memory seems to be the bigger problem due to the file sizes and caches when converting file that are about 6 gigs per hour before conversion.

There seem to bee reliability issues with the current Hauppauge HD PVR-2. I've had two of them fail: one did not record color properly (all connections verified to be correct and secure); and a second failed after using it several times. Hauppauge has replaced the USB-B female connection with a USB-micro connection, and removed the component connections entirely. They provide an adapter to connect the component video and audio to a DIN connector.

The quality of the recordings seems slightly better using the Elgato Eye HD and software thsn what I was able to obtain with Hauppauge's HD PVR-2 and HDPVRCapture. Elgato's software is more than twice as expensive as HDPVR capture, but HDPVRCapture requires the serial number of the HD PVR device, so if you replace it, you will need to contact them for a new license. Elgato simply provides you with a registration number.
