Lion abruptly logs out multiple times per day

Since upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, I've had an increasingly frustrating problem of Lion abruptly logging out. And as luck would have it, it's when I'm right in the middle of doing a bunch of work.

When it does the logout, everything just freezes for a few seconds, I sometimes see a little spinner in the middle of the screen, then it just takes me back to the login screen. I'm then able to type in my password and log back in.

Yesterday alone I was abruptly logged out seven times throughout the day. It typically happens 1-3 times a day.

My hunch at first was that it was either Photoshop or Rdio that were causing it (as they were always open when the logout would happen), but the last couple of times it happened yesterday, neither were open.

I've also had a ton of font issues (mainly with Safari), but I do have tons of fonts and use a font management app to handle them (Fontcase). So I'm also wondering if some system font issues could be causing this too?

Here are apps that I've had open when the abrupt logout has happened:

  • Photoshop
  • Rdio
  • Safari
  • Transmit
  • Textmate
  • Terminal
  • Base
  • iChat
  • Mail

I'm stumped (and thorougly annoyed) at this point. Not sure what else to do to try and narrow down the problem.

Unless anyone else has any better suggestions the only way I can think of narrowing it down would be to install Lion only onto a new partition or external drive.

Boot from that and prove that Lion works. Next add one of your non Apple apps and see how it goes. Repeat until offender found. Of course it may not be that simple - it could be a conflict between two of your non Apple apps that is causing the logout.

Another thing to try is to go to the manufacturers web sites and see if they explicitly support Lion - maybe you have some upgrades required?

I know it's only been a week since you posted this - but were you able to find the culprit of this? Any solution?

I seem to be having the same problem, although not as frequent as you mention you do.

Out of the apps you mentioned, there's only a few that overlap with what I was also running when my MBP has logged out, and asked me to log back in with my password, which are the following :

  • Safari
  • Mail

I've had other apps running as well, but none of those seem to overlap with what you had running.

Anybody have a solution to this? How do we diagnose the problem?

I have a feeling it might be the fact that the computer runs out of RAM, and then the OS forces an automatic log out but I'm just speculating at this point.

I'd love to be able to check out a problem report or something similar to diagnose the exact culprit - unfortunately I have no idea how to do that. Anybody point me in the direction to get this done?

Thanks for the help.

No solution and it's still happening (though not as frequently).

I called Apple Support and they didn't really have any idea what could be causing it, but we did a Verify Disk and it found some bad spots so we ran Repair Disk and for a couple of days I didn't get logged out, so I thought it was fixed.

But then it started back up again.

I've checked my crash logs but after doing some research on them, it seems that what is crashing (WindowServer), could be just about anything.

So...I'm still stumped.

Interesting.

1. There is a new 10.7.1 update available in the Software Update so definitely get that - I have a feeling it might remedy the issue.

2. I switched back to Google Chrome from Safari as my default browser and I haven't had the log off issue since. This is despite the fact that I've continued to run the same apps as before.

Same thing here.

I have 2 macs.

1. iMac 24" (2 years old)

2. MacBook Air 11" (Just 1 month old)

Both of them have this issue. Running only Safari and Notes.

iMac seems to do this 2 times per day, Macbook Air just did it once.

By the way, on MacBook Air I have 10.7.1 update installed.

Any idias?

On MacBook Air it happens when I've tryed to write an E-mail in GMail web interface on Safari.

Maybe it have something to do with Video Card?

Apple, please do something with it, or it will be new BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH as we have on Windows PC.

But the name of it would be: Logout Death with Restore.

I have the same issue. However, mine only occures whenever I resume after suspending or when I do a restart. It allows me to login, and the about 10-15 seconds later it logs me out. After I login the the second time, then I can work for hours with no issues. Again, it only happens right after I resume (open the lid) or when I restart the computer.

I have a MBA 2011 (just a few weeks old) running the latest lion update 10.7.1.

Any solutions yet?
