Claims of Rosetta working

A poster on the Macintouch forum writes:

'I accidentally installed Rosetta on Lion again on a different machine, MBP8,2.

It again works OK!

The RosettaNonGrata file is the handler-file that prompts 'Launch of "%@" failed: the PowerPC architecture is no longer supported', when a program tries to use Rosetta in Lion; whereas in SL it used to prompt to download Rosetta if it wasn't installed.

Re-installing Rosetta in Lion by adding the SL "translate" binary to the use/libexec/oah folder changes the default Rosetta handler file back to translate from RosettaNonGrata

My 10.7 systems now respond to the Terminal sudo sysctl kern.exec.archhandler.powerpc challenge with

kern.exec.archhandler.powerpc: /usr/libexec/oah/translate

So Rosetta is installed in Lion and is my default PowerPC architecture handler '

I don't understand a word of it. Is he deluding himself/trolling/a berk? Or has he found a magic solution?

Well, that didn't work! I copied the contents of the Snow Leopard oah folder to the Lion one, after first renaming the RosettaNonGrata file to "RosettaNonGrataOld"--attempting to launch Eudora fails. I then renamed the Snowy RosettaNonGrataSL, and removed the "Old" from the Lion. No go. No matter which of the RosettaNonGrata files I use, If I run the Terminal command:

sudo sysctl kern.exec.archhandler.powerpc

I receive the unhappy answer

kern.exec.archhandler.powerpc: /usr/libexec/oah/RosettaNonGrata

Not the "translate" answer the poster reports getting. So I don't know what the person did, looks like it was something other than copying the stuff from a working Snow Leopard folder!

That didn't have anything to do with it. FCS2 is a Universal app. It would have installed anyway. Rosetta does not work in Lion.

Actually, my FCE3.5 would not install in Lion on mine even though it is a universal app - its installer is not universal, it is PPC. I tested several methods:

one was an attempt to install from the disks (failed with warning about PPC apps not working)

one was to manually drag every file over (worked); and the last

one was to start over with a clean Lion install, use the SL disk to extract/install Rosetta (worked), followed by installing from the install disks (worked).

I tried to drag over Appleworks - that refused to work

Probably not. I have the last version of AppleWorks on my backup drive as an installed copy. It was on a bundled software package which I installed and then backed that up. If I just drag the installed app onto a drive which can run it, it starts right up.

Getting back to FCS, I had 1.5, which was the first Universal version, skipped 2 and upgraded to 3. It's entirely possible that all three had a PPC only installer and you just don't realize it.

Which brings us back to EljefeWappo's statement. I've tried Rosetta both ways in Lion; installing Lion over a clean Snow Leopard install and then reinstalling Rosetta from the SL disk, and installing Lion on an erased drive followed by Rosetta from the SL disk. Neither way will run any PPC software.

Agreed.

Ditto for Appleworks - it works on my SL partition, but will not on the Lion partition.

When you put the disk in Lion, is there a check box option to choose to just install Rosetta? I have the install disk for Leopard but I don't see any option to just install a program called "Rosetta".

I'm trying to install my old FCP Studio 2 on a brand new Lion computer. Can you please describe the steps you used to install Rosetta from the install disk. I'll find an install disk for Snow Leopard if I have too. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I did this last August or so, so memory is a bit hazy on the individual steps (I can barely remember what I had for dinner yesterday 😉 ;

the easiest (but requiring the most "manual labor") was dragging every file over from a successfully installed copy on my SL partition. For that, I followed the "uninstall FCE" in reverse, found the files, copied and parked them in the very same spots on Lion; uninstall steps here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38198?viewlocale=en_US

that worked like a charm.

As for the Rosetta aided Installer: no, there was no option to install Rosetta dialogue - simply something that it won't run because it's PPC. I know there was a thread here about extracting Rosetta from an SL disk (where to find it), but I don't have a link for it; you should also be able to use Pacifist. I followed the instructions in the thread and I'm sorry I didn't keep the link, but searching for Rosetta here should get you there. In any case, it installed successfully and then I used the FCE installer.

I would try my first method above - that would appear to be the safest route.

Hi MIchael,

Could you please let us know how you installed Snow Leopard in Parallels 7 running on Lion? AFAIK, Parallels 7 only supports the Server version of Snow Leopard (which costs several hundred dollars; no comment on that).

The various proposed solutions (found searching the net) to install SL in Parallels 7 running on Lion all seem a bit unstable, though I have not yet implemented any of them. I am hoping your solution was straight forward.

Cheers,

Sasha
