Finder Hangs Crashes and Burns in Lion: Steps to FIX

Issue Description:

Since installing OSX Lion the Finder hangs, entire system becomes unresponsive, cannot force Finder to relaunch and osx must be forced to restart.

Occurred intermittently, usually when executing searches via Finder or Spotlight, or when moving files between folders.

History of FAILED steps taken to fix issue (via Apple Support):


  1. SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)
  2. PRAM reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
  3. Clear User and System Caches
  4. Cleared Login Items for User Profile
  5. Ran Apple Hardware Test (3 hours, more info http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509)
  6. Reinstall Lion via Recovery Partition method (Control + R, ie not a clean install of Lion)

The above was included in case you’re dealing with same issue and troubleshooting wondering what the **** to try next. Or if you plan on calling Apple Support it will give you some idea of what might be planned (and averted).
