Remove AT&T Simlock

Hi Community,

until now I have read some posts regarding the AT&T simlock on US Iphones and got the information that an unlock can only do by the carrier itself. Unfortunately AT&T doesn't provide this service, therefore the Iphones sold in the US are locked forever to AT&T in a normal case. Now the situation has changed and Iphones can be bought without a simlock to AT&T in the US. Does anybody know, if there is now a possibility to get an unlock to an 3GS that was directly bought in April 2010 in an Apple Store without a signed contract to AT&T?

Hi KC7GNM,

Yes, I noticed that and there was no solution for my question. I later found the solution and wanted to share that in the forum so it will enlighten others who have the same query in mind. Hopefully I am not violating forum guidelines.

No, nothing has changed, AT&T will not unlock an iPhone for anyone for any reason. This has nothing to do with the fact that Apple has started selling officially unlocked iPhones in the US. If your phone is locked to AT&T, there is still no way to get it officially unlocked.
