Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is GONE!! after Lion install

After installing Lion on my new early 2011 MBP the AHT is gone...

Pressing "D" will not load the AHT (it was installed and working fine in my MBP prior to Lion).

I called the APP hotline to inquire about it and the technician couldn't boot into the AHT on all the macs with Lion available to him.

(a report has been filed with the engineering team)

According to the newly updated KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

QUOTE: "Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet."

After pressing and holding the "D" key the Mac just loads into the desktop... There is no online AHT or pre-installed AHT available...

>> Is anybody else having this problem?? <<

If you are having the same problem maybe you should also report it to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ or the APP hotline...

I have the same issue with my Late 2008 MBP running on Lion. Holding the "D" button doesn't load the Apple Hardware Test, even when I inserted my installation DVD on my superdrive.

I was able to use the downloaded AHT package on Lion, but the upgrade to Mavericks killed it. Now the only thing that works are my original Snow Leopard install disks (specifically Disk 2, which contains the correct AHT for my mid-2010 MBP). Once that disk is in, pushind D without any modifier keys boots up the original AHT and it functions perfectly.

Can you help me resolve this issue? I upgraded from 10.4 (original Install disc) to 10.6. I was mistakenly using the retail OS X 10.6 to try and boot Apple Hardware Test but kept failing, as I would just receive a normal login screen.

I followed kimfromberwyn's instructions and copied the ".diagnostics" folder from "/System/Library/CoreServices" on the original Leopard install disc to "/System/Library/CoreServices" on my iMac running 10.6. However, when I try and restart holding "D," the drive ejects the disc. Option + D does not work either.

In fact, most commands given at startup don't seem to work at all, See my thread here:

I even tried this suggestion with the Tiger disc in the drive, but it brought up an installation screen--not a command line.

I called Apple and was told my system is "obsolete" and they no longer support machines which originally shipped with 10.4. Their advice was to reinstall the OS, which only removed the .diagnostics folder from CoreServices once more.

My only hope is one of the true Apple geniuses on this forum can think of a solution. I've gotten very sage advice here before.

If you're in NY bring it in to Tekserve. They will probably still work on it. Although there may be a charge for the diagnosis. If you are seeing .diagnostics in its proper location with invisible files folders toggled on, and it still doesn't work, then I doubt anyone here will be able to offer a solution. If the drive has never been replaced, it's quite likely that. They don't last forever.

To toggle invisibility on, copy into Terminal

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true ; killall Finder

Then hit return/enter and navigate to that location in CoreServices.

To reverse, change the true to false

Oops! I forgot to mention that I manually upgraded the RAM to 2GB and internal HD to a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black.

I always suspected my new HD wasn't up to snuff because it makes an audible crunching sound whereas the native 250GB was almost completely silent. WD offered me the option to exchange the drive (and its still under warranty), but I paid $100 to have the drive installed by an authorized Apple service center and they wanted to be paid again to replace the drive.

Could either the RAM or new HD be causing the issue?

Sure, but can't be certain without running the AHT or getting a diagnosis from a shop which will run the Apple Service Diagnostic for your model.

If you could boot and get in, you can try running the free demo to see what it says about the drive. Also, get in to Console in Utilities>System Log and see if it's showing I/O errors.

And if you can open Disk Utiltiy and see if it says

SMART Status Verified or not. Although it can be failing and still show verified. SMART from with DU is not very reliable.
