"New Message" Sound Not Playing In Mail 5

Since I have upgraded to OS X Lion and Mail 5, I have noticed that the "new message" sound is not playing when I receive a new email. I have checked the settings, and the option for this is enabled. I am using Gmail and have the "idle command" option enabled, and I suspect that this may be involved in the issue.

I have read that in the past Mail had an issue where it would only play the "new message" sound if it had received the new message by polling the server. If the new message was received through the "idle" command, then the "new message" sound would not be played. Perhaps this is the same bug.

Is anyone else having this issue? I know I could just turn off the "idle" command, but I'm looking for an actual fix to the underlying issue. I've reported it to Apple, but I would like to see if anyone else has noticed this.

Thanks for the suggestion to try the fix @ the top of this discussion, Nut Village Ferenc; i'd already done that. But I do have some plot material.

The other day I started a Facetime chat; when I finished and closed Facetime, my mail sounds came back!

My theory is that the app earlier had captured the iMac sound device and never released it. Starting Facetime and quitting it did the job for me.

The first bit's OK, but right clicking doesn't display anything that has anything to do with mail. The only option I have available when I right click (in Audio MIDI Setup) is the option to Configure speakers... And selecting that doesn't take me anywhere that has anyting to do with mail.

(See following post, which I've kept at the 'top' level because it's applicable to the problem in general rather than this comment.)

Dear Andrew and all others who are having sound issues (no alert sounds, intermittent alert sounds, no outgoing mail sounds, no incoming mail sounds, or any combination thereof):

i have been having this problem forever, mostly intermittent, but sometimes all sounds will go out, both incoming and outgoing...have taken it to the genius bar 2 or 3 times...no one knew how to fix it...even called apple tech support, and they said "tech guys know about this, but it is low priority for them to fix it" Really??? it has been driving me CRAZY, so today, i again took it to the genius bar. Here is what they did, and told me to do, if it happens again:

go to the upper right hand corner of computer screen and click on the spyglass icon, "spotlight", type in "utilities"; then go to "disk utilities"....you will see a box...in the upper left hand corner, click on "Macintosh HD" (i believe it is the 2nd item listed), then "repair permissions". it will probably take a couple minutes. he told me that it has to do with the "permissions" aspect of the computer. he said the computer will try to obtain permissions for various sites, and sometimes, after doing this over and over, it will get hung up or lost, and not be able to find the "permissions" it is supposed to be set on, so you may have to occasionally do this again, from time to time....

I am not a big computer person, and only know how to do what i have experienced doing, but after he reset the "permissions" in this way, it began to work again, and all mail sounds were back!

try it, and let me know how it works for you!!! hopefully, this is THE solution!!!

Dear Chaz:

please see my above email to Andrew and All concerning this "sounds" problem....it worked!!! i couldn't believe it, as this has been happening to me forever, and nothing i did in systems preferences or mail preferences with regards to "sound" did any good at all.....let me know if you don't see it (my response to Andrew), and also let me know if it fixes your sound problems. it did for me! good luck!

Joyce, I know it's in the thread somewhere but here's how to restore the Mail sounds.

Go to applications/utilities and run Audio Midi Setup. Click the Builtin output link in the left pane click the down arrow next to the right-mast element after "Format" and change to something else, then back to what you originally had there. All pent-up sounds will come rushing through your speakers and you'll be OK with Mail sounds until it happens again. This worked for me in OS X 10.7 Lion; the problem seems to have been fixed in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Good luck!

BTW the easy way to find the Audio midi app is to go to the Launch pad and type "mid". It'll pop right up.
