    HI,

To some extent this does depend which portal you use to create an Apple ID.

If you are doing it through iTunes then it will ask for Payment details.  (So will going to the "Store" later in iTunes if you enter an Apple ID that is not set up  for payment).

You should start here and choose the Manage option as this route does allow you to access the New registration page.

The @mac.com Registration Page is here and was/is billed as the "Free iChat Name" but is in fact a Valid Apple ID as well as being a Valid AIM Name.

You have to keep the password to 16 characters or Less (if using with AIM/iChat/Messages beta)

Also the email you list for verification/Password recovery/Security CANNOT be one already linked to an Apple ID.

    Hi,

Are you saying that as your Apple ID is linked in to iTunes it seems to be Store (Country) specific ?

    Open iTunes

    GO to Store

    Select Account (top right)

Does this option not do it ?

i have the same question lol

  • Jenski0000 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I'm having same problem...2 accounts, old one I don't have access to the email anymore and tried to add a new email to the account so I would get d/l notifications, purchases etc...however it won't allow me to verify the new email because it is already connected to my other apple id? Any suggestions other than having to get a third email?

  • Ralph Johns (UK) Level 9 Level 9 (69,555 points)

    HI,

At the the Apple ID link above is the option Manage Account.

That will take you to a new page (a text based version, almost, of the previous page) with another Link to Login, which will take you to a page that look like this:-

    Apple - My Apple ID-13
    Uploaded with Skitch!

Use the Manage account option (Again).

And for your ID you will get a page like this

    (Part Page)

    Apple - My Apple ID-14
    Uploaded with Skitch!

As you can see by my annotations you may be able to swap out the secondary email and use it on another Apple ID  (this does presume that you can access both Apple IDs)

The top email Address in my pic is the email I use to login in to Discussions (Apple Support Communities) it also does iTunes and so on.

It has also been linked to my iCloud ID.

It now cannot be changed if the external Email ID is linked to an iCloud name  (it has always been the case that @mac.com and @me.com names cannot be changed- with iCloud an external ID is Hard Linked as it were to the @Me.com iCloud issued ID)

I created a new email address and changed my primary to this address. I verified the address and changed my accounts on my devices to reflect the new address/login. However when I go to app store to purchase or update an app it still comes up with old ID and now says password is wrong.

    HI,

Many People use two or more IDs to buy from the iTunes And App store portals.

You are likley to have to Change your account details with iTunes  if this is what you want to do.

As you have changed the Name (At the place iTunes Checks) then the Name and Password combo don't match.

The message may be deliberately obscure as to whether it is the Name or the Password.

As an example if you create an @mac.com name and use it in iChat but create a password over the 16 character limit the AIM Message will refer to Name and Password possibly having "errors"

However there is a separate message if the Name does not exist in the first place (which infers name only)

In my case, I had two accounts, One that had no money tied to it using my primary email (iPod) and the other using my credit card and a defunct University email address (original Apple ID).

Apple doesn't allow you to delete accounts from it's server easily so I had to essentially change the AppleID and email address for one of the accounts in order to free my the other email address so I could replace my defunct email in my original Apple ID .

After that, I had to go into my devices and DELETE the currently signed in account -- as it was still registered as my University email account and there is no way to dissociate it on your device (without removing it whole!). Then I just had to enter in my new account..

oh yea… and then I finally set up my iCloud. Ironically (or maybe appropriately), the first message that popped up upon setup was: "If you create this account, you can only do it once" or something to that effect.

I'm having the same problem, I just need to delete an apple ID that is connected to my Itunes account after the I cloud changeover and it keeps coming up "wrong password"....What a joke, we can do everything with these devices, but we can't easliy delete an acount that gets goofed up.....give me a break!!!

What pain in the @#$%.......Security is a huge issue with these devices today, Again, What a Joke!!!

Hi Ralph! Thank you for all your input in this thread.

My question is, my apple ID is a example@gmail.com, and when I purchased my very first MacBook Pro at the beginning of this week, I signed up for iCloud and created an example@me.com account. Are the two automatically linked? For example, when I purchase my iPad next week, iCloud will push mail for both accounts to both devices? I've already come to the conclusion that Apple refuses at this point to allow you to change your Apple ID to an example@me.com account, which just seems like bad business on their part.

    HI,

I was also helping in this thread

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18107026?ac_cid=142432#18107026

The Poster, Christiaan found a link that you may find helpful.

(I went to scan the linked thread quickly but did find it needed slowere reading)

Like you my Apple ID I use everyday is from an external to Apple Email  (it is an ISP email ID rather than Google though).

The options when creating an iCloud ID are to use an existing Apple ID and create an @me.com name

    This is what I did.

What this seems to do is Hard Link the two name parts to the extent the password is then the same.

I can not login using either name part + the password to iTunes, Apple Support Communities, App Store, and so on.

If I Login to iCloud using the @me.com name it still tells me the Account in the Apple ID name.

On the Apple ID support page I can no longer change my Primary Email (As it is hard linked to an Apple @me.com name).

The Link I gave above seems to suggest that it may be possible using the link listed in the other thread (that Christiaan also links)

Personally I was trying to Drop the email listing of my Apple ID (I had a Google Mail ID listed here at Apple Support Communities.

However linking the @me.com name did away with that leaving me stuck with the ISP email (In fact is is a dial-up account that I can still Fetch).

So that are only Automatically linked IF you chose to use the existing Apple ID set up the iCLoud one.

So, then am I correct in saying, by using this method, you were able to change your primary e-mail address to your @me account, but it is still impossible to change your actual Apple ID?

  • Ralph Johns (UK) Level 9 Level 9 (69,555 points)

    Hi,

I was unable to Change the Primary email (which is also the Apple ID)

As the iCloud @me.com name is linked to it (I would say Hard Coded almost) the Apple ID now acts the same way @mac.com and MobileMe account names do - you cannot change the Primary email on these either - which has been known about for a long time.

Most of this does not bother me.

It seems no different to what those people who had @mac.com names from the .Mac service linking with their MobileMe account @me.com names (except that although for me both emails still work and one is external to Apple - I would guess there are some people who's Apple ID is no longer a valid email)

The bit that did bother me was the dumping by the Apple Support Communities of an additional email I was using to get Subscription Alerts (for new posts to threads I am Involved in) - Previously I had been able to add a separate email to my Account Settings and no that control is no longer there.

I was saying that in the other thread the poster involved had posted a link that suggested that it could be done.

I had followed the link (To yet another thread) and scanned the contents quickly and decided that it needing looking in to more before I tried it myself.  (ergo I don't conclusively know whether it works)
