Q: What would cause WindowServer to start using up to 100% of the CPU?

I have recently updated to Lion and when I leave my MacBook Pro for some time I come back and find it unresponsive because WindowServer has started using 100% (or more) of the CPU. Applications don't respond and the computer will even refuse to shut down because the processor is busy.

The problem has only become a real problem since installing Lion. However, in retrospect, I wonder if I was seeing some of the symptoms before (in milder form). When the screen saver started under Snow Leopard, the fan on the MacBook Pro would start to run, suggesting the CPU was working hard when only powering the screen saver.

I have tried zapping the PRAM and have repaired the permissions several times.

Any other suggestions out there would be very much appreciated.

Hi tjk, thanks for the suggestion and I have posted it to the Lion discussion.

I reinstalled Lion using the Command-R recovery option. I am not sure what the other options are as there is no install disk, which used to give the option of a 'clean' install.

Yes, I am wishing I had stuck with Snow Leopard for longer.

Any difference after Recovery option? (Sorry, I don't even know what that actually does. )

Hope you'll keep us posted on what works/what doesn't. Thanks

    Hi tjk

No signs of improvement. If I leave the computer for any time the programs either crash or become unresponsive and I have to restart. Restarting causes Finder to crash and I have to relaunch to have it close down, even then it will not close down fully on its own.

I keep checking Software Update hoping to find OSX 10.7.1 with some sort of fix!

A clean install is now an option using this new Apple utility: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

But it sounds to me like you may have hardware problems. There are too many things going wrong too often.

I think that's a wonderful idea (unless that's what you already tried).

AFA hardware, when you read all the Lion posts . . . .

Visited the Genius Bar yesterday and they installed a clean version of 10.7. Updated to 10.7.1 today, but the problems persist.

First, I am on 10.6.8 and have no plans to install Lion. That said, there are people running Lion with an overall stable experience, so it should be possible. Did you try running it on the bare installation after Apple installed an absolutely clean/vanilla Lion? If so, and problems persist, then likely there is at least one hardware issue. If not, then that's what you need to do, adding one thing and running with it installed until you're sure it isn't causing issues, then installing the next thing. This includes peripherals.

Touch wood things seem to be running fine now. Not sure which of these was the 'silver bullet".

After resetting PRAM, SMC, verifying disk and repairing permissions I restarted in safe mode (hold shift).

I uninstalled Adobe Air and removed its files from the Library.

Switched off time machine (I found a reference in one discussion to fseventsd hanging due to corrupted TC backup.

All seems much happier now. I await what happens when I reconnect TC.

Reconnect TC: that should indeed be interesting.

When I find issues such as this, I try to change only one thing at a time, so I have a pretty good idea what fixed it and/or was causing it. I would try running the way things are until you're comfortable things are "normal," then just add/change one thing (including new software/updates).

I'm also having this issue, Lion 10.7.2. Windowserver begins taking 100% of the CPU sometimes after I dock my macbook air to a thunderbolt display. I haven't found any suggestions for a fix.

Have you read through this entire thread and tried all the suggestions? If not, that's first step. If so, I'd start a new thread and list what you have tried.
