Aug 11, 2011 5:25 AM in response to Schuconby BAH MI,New member here. I am STILL using AW for all docs and spreadsheets as well. Have 10.6.2 and not upgraded. Have some questions for you : Is rosetta still enabled after you upgraded to 10.6.8 ? Do you have AW spreadsheets on a backup HD or other removable media? (try to open that) Do you also have iWORKS on your MAC ?
(drag spsht. to Numbers icon in dock to convert and access data)
You may need to re-install AW 6.2.9 to your mac from disk or other source.

Aug 12, 2011 9:00 AM in response to BAH MIby Schucon,I have reinstalled AW and its no help. Everything worked fine until the latest upgrade of the OS, hence the question. I do not have iWorks. I have used and older system to convert some documents and spreadsheats to MS Office 2008. However I am very concerned about my database side breaking down. I have an extensive address book on it and re-entering that info into other program would be a real pain. Thanks.

Dec 1, 2011 12:45 PM in response to Schuconby Margaret S.,Sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to post an original question. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction.
My problem has to do accessing Appleworks, and opening older documents like recipes and old spreadsheets, which I need.
This problem is recent, and I think originates with a recent software update on MaclinkPlus.
Could somebody help me get back into this great old program and my documents?
Thanks.

Front page of the community. Look to the right. Find "Actions" Immediately under that you'll see "Start a Discussion"
Be sure to include details of your Mac OS version.
Details regarding what behaviour AppleWorks exhibits when you try to open a document would also be helpful.

Barry
Meantime, I'd suggest doing the usual maintenance tasks:
Delete the AppleWorks preference files found at yourname > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks
Delete the Appleworks plist file in the Preferences folder as well: com.apple.appleworks.plist
Delete the items in the Recent Items folder at yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Documents > Starting Points > Recent Items

Dec 1, 2011 5:16 PM in response to Barryby Margaret S.,Thank you for your suggestions; I will try those.
As for the details, when I try to open a .cwk document, I get the MacLinkPlus dialog box, with the blue line. The blue line never goes more than a 1/4 inch or so, then sometimes I get an error message. And, if I try to open the Appleworks program, I get a message that says the operationng could not be completed; unexpected error, code 1712. And when I click on OK, nothing happens; I still have the dialog box.

Dec 1, 2011 9:46 PM in response to Margaret S.by Barry,Mac OS version?
What do you do when you "try to open the AppleWorks program"?
What happens on the screen between that time and the time you see the error message?
Do you get the same error message when MacLinkPlus stops, or a different one?
Apple Error code -1712 is a time out error. Not very specific, but generally speaking, it means your Mac was trying to do something, and the system decided that whatever it was had taken more time than it should have—enough more time to indicate a problem.

Dec 2, 2011 12:56 PM in response to Barryby Margaret S.,I have the Appleworks icon on my dock. I double click on it to open it. When I do that, instead of it opening, the MacLinkPlus dialog box appears, with the blue line not moving more than the 1/4 inch. The "beach ball" spins around for a few minutes, then I get that error message. Thanks for explaining that it is a time out error. Same message whether I am trying to open AW, or a .cwk document)
I am unable to move the AW icon off the dock.
I have followed your suggestions regarding the 3 deletions you listed about preferences, recent items, etc. I assume by "delete" you mean "move to trash". That does not seem to have had any effect with this problem.
One good thing I have found is that by dragging a .cwk document file onto Pages or Numbers on the dock, they do immediately translate, so I have not lost those. Anything older than that I realize are not supported, so if I can't get AW up and running again I will have to say goodbye to those files. I don't really relish the idea of having to go through all my files, translating each .cwk document one at a time to Pages or Numbers. So, I would sure love to get AW fixed if possible.
Thank you very much for your help, so far.

Dec 3, 2011 2:20 AM in response to Margaret S.by Barry,Hi Margaret,
I'm a bit puzzled over why MacLink Plus is getting involved in this, especially when you try to open AppleWorks by clicking the icon n the Dock.
We're still at the diagnostic stage here.
Could you try these two tests, please:
- Go to the Finder, then to the Go menu and choose Applications.
In the Applications folder, open the AppleWorks 6 folder, then double click the AppleWorks 6 application to launch it. Report your observations. - If that fails, try this: From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences > Accounts.
If the lock at the bottom left is locked, click it then enter an administrator ID and password.
Click the + sign (lower left) and add a new account.
When you have the new account ready, close System Preferences (and any other open applications), then go Apple menu > Log off yourname.
At the log in screen, log in to the account you just created.
Try to launch AppleWorks using first the method above.
Report your observations.

Dec 5, 2011 1:10 PM in response to Schuconby Margaret S.,Test 1. Attempted to launch Appleworks following your directions. I immediately get the MacLinkPlus "translating" dialog box. The blue line is 1/4 inch filled in and doesn't move. After 2 minutes I get the same error message, #1712. And, the beach ball just keeps spinning. It won't allow me to delete the box from my screen.
Test 2. Following your directions, I created the new account, and was able to successfully launch Appleworks. Then, I logged out of the test account and back into my regular account, and again attempted to launch Appleworks. This time it was successful. I also was able to launch AW by clicking on a .cwk document.
Thank you so much for your help with this puzzling problem. I don't suppose you can explain what happened in simple terms? Any suggestions for how to avoid this problem in future?
Cheers,
Margaret

Sorry, it's a mystery to me, especially the part about it operating fine in your usual account after opening it in the new account. The "New account" process is usually just a diagnostic step to get an indication whether the problem lies within the account, or if a wider search is needed.
The long term suggestion, of course is to move away from Appleworks, as painful as I know that will be.

Barry
