How do I break the connection between my remote and my iMac

I've got my iMac set up in the same room as my AppleTV. When I use the remote with my Apple TV, I inadvertently trigger music or videos to start playing on my nearby iMac. I don't need to use my remote with the iMac, so how can I break the connection between the two?
