Is there a Desktop icon representing the SD card? If so, CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Eject from the contextual menu.

Thank you Kappy for your quick response. I am not inserting a SD card. I am connecting the camcorder by USB cord to my Mac. I haven't seen an icon that represents the USB. I pressed the eject button on my keyboard, but I didn't see that it gave me any indication that the USB had been disconnected. The camcorder screen did not indicate that it was ready to be disconnected either.
I would also like to add that the flash memory in my camcorder is internal and cannot be removed from the camera.

Open a Finder window and when the device is connected you will see it on the left pane. The easiest way to safely eject it is click the upside down triangle with a line under it that is next to the device. You will know it's safe to physically disconnect it when the device dissapears from the Finder window. It will look something like:iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)
