The feature in Lion that re-opens the applications that I used prior to my last shutdown is REALLY irritating me. When I shut down, I unheck the re-open windows box and even had a "genius" chose an option in the general preferences to stop it, yet it keeps occurring. Chrome and Lightroom are the two applications that seem to be opening without end.
Any ideas?
FOund it, (used Cocktail instead of the terminal as my typing isn't the best and if you miss one letter in the terminal you are screwed!) any way, the file is already locked. I did make it "read only" didn't work, everything still opens 😠 and yes, I closed everything before making it read only. Did a test to see if I had just locked it with some windows open and no, it doesn't open the same windows every time. It's still saving each state when I shutdown
Also went back and did it to the same named file just inside Pref's folder (not in the "byhost folder) and no luck...
The file to lock is the one that ends with ".plist", not the one that ends with ".lockfile". This plist file is where resume info is stored.
It appears you didn't lock the plist file correctly. In the "General" portion of the Get Info dialog, just check the box that says "Locked". It has nothing to do with the "Sharing & Permissions" settings.

Locking the login plist file did the trick for me - in fact, I now have it locked to only open the two programs I always want to open - Safari + Excel by having them open when I got the info and locked the plist file.
Since the Lion upgrade, having to do this, and having to "repair permissions" - whatever computer-talk that is, to keep my Mac from hanging up while starting up, seems to indicate OS-X may be drifting (not even close to being there yet) toward becoming the same pain-in-the- that caused me to come to MAC 4 years ago.

It is most likely the numerous amount of login items that you have checked by default. Just go to system preferences, users and groups, make sure you are on your account, click the "login items" tab and try deleting each of them. Let me know how that works. Good luck!
So I found the file to lock it, but the "locked" box is unchecked and is faded out so it won't let me actually lock it. Any ideas why? I'm the only user on this computer and have full admin rights. This startup has been annoying me since the regretful day I upgraded.
Did you try unlocking the padlock, right at the bottom of that 'get info' window?
yes, it still didn't let me check it
Ok, and after having unlocked it, did you change the permission to read & write?
The only thing I can select is "stationary pad"
