Does the device recognize that it is plugged into USB?
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore. Has that been tried?
Has iTunes been closed and restarted? What about rebooting the computer?

i've been on the apple website. they said to restart my device, ck usb port connection, uninstall itunes and reinstall it. now i'm having trouble reinstalling!!! gonna try again.
