Problem placing items in trash.

This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action.

Just installed Design Premium 5.5 yesterday, and I'm not able to dump things into the trash without getting the above message. I used to be able to let things stay in the trash until I wanted to empty it. Any help would be appreciated!

this may help:

courtesy of Niel:

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Ownership & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:

mkdir ~/.Trash

If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:

sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash

chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash

The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.

I've been away and therefore unable to reply until today. I did as suggested, courtesy of Niel. I don't have any experience with the Terminal, however I did do what was suggested. One question: I did put in the first line after determining the folder exists. It asked for the password and I provided that as well. I am now able to put things in the trash normally.

However, I didn't get to put in the line

chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash

I next followed the instructions to relaunch. Is there any issue with not having run the item above? I'm concerned about fouling up something without realizing it.
