Screen resolution problem: 680 x 480 only option!

Hi all

I started my Mac Pro this morning, and while the machine seemed to start OK, the screen remained blank.

So I restarted. This time, things appeared on the screen but with terrible resolution.

When I went to change the resolution, the only option available was 680 x 480; see below

What to do? What's the problem?

P.

Well, you could try resetting pram and smc but I really that stuff doesn't affect what you are seeing. Still, worth a shot though.

Maybe your video card is failing. Do you have any other video card or monitor to try?

I guess you have nothing to loose at this point so one last thing you might try is to get rid of (maybe keep backup copies just in case) the preference files associated with the displays.

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.XXXXXX.plist

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays2.XXXXXXX.plist

where ~ is your home directory and the X's are a sequence of dash separated letters and digits.

For the record, the problem was fixed by unplugging the power from the monitor and then plugging the power cord back in (all while the computer was running). Just to clarify, rebooting the computer did not work; we had to have the computer ON and remove then replace the power.

Of course, this was the solution after spending an hour trying all sorts of other more difficult solutions! Thanks to X423424X for your help.
