No sound (or red light)- internal speakers OR headphone port (Macbook)
Twice in the past (last time was several months ago - no problems since) my internal speakers have stopped playing sounds on my 2008 aluminum Macbook. Both previous times the red light was on, and the volume was locked/stuck (volume icon had a line through it). I looked online and found the method of wiggling the toothpick in the headphone port, and that fixed it immediately both times.
This afternoon I unplugged my external speakers and came back a while later (my mac stayed in one place) to find that the internal speakers weren't working- and neither are my headphones. This time, there is no red light in the port, and the volume icon does work- I can see the volume changing on the screen, but i don't hear anything.
I tried the toothpick trick with no luck. If I wiggle the toothpick in a certain place- the red light does come on, but goes off again when the toothpick is moved.
I played around with inserting and removing the headphone jack- with no luck. System Preferences was open to the Sound page- and this is what it looked like:
(Name: Internal Speakers ... Type: Headphone Port)
(this was when the headphones were OUT, when I inserted them, the name changed to Headphones, but the type remained Headphone Port)
I closed (accidentaly!) System Prefs, reopened it... and then it said this:
(Name: Headphones ... Type: Built-in)
(this was when the headphones were IN, when I removed them, the name changed to Internal Speakers, but the type remained Built-in)
I don't live anywhere near an apple store, and the very last thing I want to do is send it off.
If you have any suggestions on fixing this OR even just what might be wrong... Let me know!
Any help is appreciated!!!! 🙂 thanks!
