Lion does not recognize Canon MX860 AIO

After upgarading my MBA (2009) running SnowLeopard to Lion, the previous MS Office did not work. I updated it to Office:Mac 2008. Then I noticed my Canon MX860 AIO no longer printed. Belatedly I learnt from Canon website that I was supposed to update Canon drivers BEFORE upgrading to Lion. I am not sure how I was supposed to gues that but maybe I am a novice.

I had the printer installed on my 1TB Time Capsule as a networked device. But today I even tried by hooking it to MBA via USB. No dice.

In any case, I need help to bring my Canon MX860 back to use. It is an excellent printer/scanner and ofcourse in excellent working condition (only a year old) so it would be a shame for me to go buy another printer.

Thank you for your help.

- Nothing happens when I disconnect printer from MBA.

- When I send a print request the print queue window opens but after a few seconds a message says "

A communication error has occurred." and printer goes into pause mode.

- After connecting printer to MBA with USB cable then attempting to add a printer, in the Add Printer window, the MX860 does not come up at all.

However, a new development is as follows:

- Bonjour found the MX680 Scanner and allowed me to "install" it.

- After waiting in this state for about 10 minutes, the MC860 / cijnetwork showed up and allowed me to install the MC860 Printer. But, it still did not print.

- Now After several hours, I tried again and the kind:cijnetwork in add printer/scanner showed up again and allowed me to install MX860 again. After this installation, the printer works.

Presently, the problem appears to be solved but I have no idea why?

Thank you for your help.

I have been trying that for a couple of days but it did not help. But this afternoon, for no apparent reason, the ADD PRINTER route found the MX860, allowed me to install it and I am able to print from all applications.

I have no idea why there was trouble before and why it has worked now. I have done absolutely nothing differently since Thursday last.

Thank you for your help.

"Try starting over and using this tool: Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 3.1.2 (Mac OS X 10.4/10.5/10.6/10.7)"

Yesterday I had rep[orted that my problem was solved for no apparent reason (see above). However, today I have the same problem so whatever it was that worked was temporary.

Today I downloaded two drivers from Canon USA site,

- mcpd-mac-mx860-10_42_3-ea8_2.dmg

MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.42.3...

- mnt_-mac-3_1_2-ea11.dmg

Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 3.1.2 (Mac OS X 10...

After installing them and figuring out where these reside in the file system, I have found what appears to work.

So thank you wdunn. I will also click Helpful Answer in your message above.

I contacted Canon and this was the reply that I received:

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused. In

order for the MX860 to work with 10.7, we will have to completely

uninstall all of the printer driver information for 10.6, then reinstall

all the 10.7 drivers. Please complete the following steps:

We're going to attempt to delete all of the drivers software content

from your Mac and reinstall the printer and scanner driver. To delete

all drivers, please follow the steps below:

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Select Print & Scan.

3. Select the Canon MX860 printer, then select the '-', minus sign, to

delete the printer from the Print & Fax window.

4. Close the Print & Scan window.

5. Open the hard drive (Macintosh HD).

6. Open the Library folder.

7. Open the Printers folder.

8. Trash the Canon folder and empty the trash.

9. Open the Macintosh HD.

10. Open the Library folder.

11. Open the Image Capture folder, then open Twain Data Sources folder

12. Trash the PIXMA MX860.ds file.

13. Restart your computer, then empty the trash.

14. After the trash is emptied, restart your Mac.

15. Once your Mac has restarted, reinstall the 10.7 drivers, and the

printer should be able to print successfully.

However, I have received the error message that the printer is not connected.

FWIW I also couldn't get the scanner portion of my 860 to work when hooked up to my AirPort Extreme. After a few stalled attempts, I decided to just skip the IMO clunky Canon driver process of installation (it always seems too confusing which driver to use from their website, etc) I just used the built-in scan-to-USB-drive... plugged in a small 256MB USB drive into the front-right bottom corner of printer, hit the scan button, save to USB, and then plugged the USB drive into my MacBook. Worked great, the Canon automatically saved a multi-page scanned document into single tidy PDF. I know it's old school, but honestly seemed faster than juggling all the Canon drivers.

Hello,

The advice you gave worked for me the last time my MacBook Pro failed to communicate with my Canon MX860. Everything was then fine until this morning when I installed the latest OS 10.7 Lion update. Got the familiar message "a communication error has occurred."

Recalling the previous advice, I again deleted the printer, the Canon folder from the Library etc., emptied trash, restarted and re-downloaded the Canon CUPS printer driver.

This time, no luck. Cannot see the Canon printer when I try to add it.

Any further suggestions?

I am surprised.

After initial torubles, I had downloaded new drivers in Aug 2011 for my MBA 2009 with the new Lion OS X and reinstalled. The printer worked and was fine. Later, I also bought the new MBA in 2011 and the Canon MX 860 just worked. Since that time I have changed to OS X Mountain Lion and there has been no hitch with the printer or any thing else.

You may want to get new drivers from Canon and follow the reinstall procedure.
