java jdk 1.5 on intel?

I second this. Is there a way to install 1.5 on an intel mac?

The preview release is old, the latest is J2SE 5.0 Release 3, which can be downloaded here, but again it's only for PPC.

Mac OS X for Intel ships with Java 1.5, you don't need to download any extra packages.

this is what I get on my macbook:

java -version

java version "1.4.2_09"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_09-239)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-66, mixed mode)

fixed it up:

I had to put the 1.5.0 jre into my path.

Indeed. As detailed on About J2SE 5.0 Release 3 for Mac OS X v10.4.2 or later you'll have to use the utilities in /Applications/Utilities/Java to change your default JVM version for applications and applets, and as detailed here you'll have to specify the path to the command-line tools.

A bit of a hassle, I know, but not specific to the Intel release 🙂

The latest preview release on the Apple Developer Connection web site claims to be: J2SE 5.0 Release 4 DP7 (Intel) (Disk Image)

I'm pretty certain this works ok with Intel Macs as I helped a friend to install it on a Macbook earlier this week.

You can get hold of the download by going to connect.apple.com then creating a free ADC account, logging in and following your nose through the downloads.

If you only ever want to use Java 1.5 then I recommend the entering the Terminal commands given in message two of that thread.

I'm fairly sure it has been in the base system for Intel Macs since their release.

J2SE 5.0 was essentially 'included' by 10.4.4 (the first Intel-compatible release), so yeah.
