reducing the size of iTunes files

Once i have imported songs to iTunes can i make them smaller files so i can post them on my website?

powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.4), iTunes 6

You can use iTunes' "Convert..." command to change files to different sizes, but you cannot change any files purchased from the iTunes store.

Set the Import preferences in iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Import tab to the desired size for new files. This setting affects any future CD rips as well as the Convert command. Right-click the track to change and choose "Convert to ...". The original file is left untouched in your library. Convert actually makes a copy.

Converting between formats does reduce the audio quality, regardless of the new file encoding and bit rate.
