I tried using a usb hub that I hadn't used in a while. I didn't know which ac adapter was for it, so I tried a few. Unfortuneately I plugged the hub into my mac first, and when I powered the hub, the mac restarted (I guess because I used the wrong adapted). I also tried it on both usb ports. Now my external hard drive isnt even powered when plugged in, both works fine on other devices.

If it reads data from other devices it should be okay, but if it was powering your hard drive and no longer works then you could have damaged the power output section on the port. Did you try plugging the drive into other USB ports.
you can also try taking it the apple store.
I tried both ports, no power. I also tried different devices to no avail.
However everything works when plugged into another computer
The power settings on the USB ports are no good. You will need to have your computer serviced at Apple.
