2011 MacBook Air + 24" Cinema Display = flicker/black screen

(Cross-posted from MBA discussion board)

Hi everyone,

Just for the sake of bringing this to other people's attention, I'm making a posting here in the Cinema Display forum (previously posted to MBA forum).

Some of you may know about the problems that others with 2011 MBPs and Mac Minis, both with Thunderbolt ports, are having with the older 24" Apple Cinema Displays. Reports of occaisional flickering or outright black screens have been plauging the mesage boards as of late. But up until now, no one has reported having the same issue with the new MacBook Airs.

Well, I'm here to tell you that unfortunately, they seem to have the same issue - my brand new 13" MBA is causing the same blackout / flickering problems with my 2-year old ACD - and I know it's a t-bolt issue, because whenever I trade that out for my 2008 15" MacbookPro, the problem mysteriously vanishes.

I'm hoping that Apple is coming up with a firmware or software update for this problem, but given how long the MBP's have been seeing this issue, I'm not exactly optomisitc. I would encourage others with new MBAs and 24" ACDs that also experience this problem to post here, as well as calling into AppleCare - even if your ACD is not under warranty - it might somehow be helpful in pushing a resolution to this issue along.

Applied the update but still experience the problem. I think it is a serious design flaw with regard to how the cables of the cinema display are attached to your macbook air. Whereas with the macbook pro the displayport usb port and power were all togheter on the right side on the macbook air (allowing for no stress on the cable) the display port and the power are on opposite sides of the macbook air. If you hookup your displayport to the mac the cables are being held at an awkward angle causing stress on the interior of the cable which my screen to flicker and even my usb to disconnect infrequently. I think this is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

In the meantime I just use an extra adapter to hook up power to my macbook air which allows for the displayport cable and usb cable to be attached to the macbook without stressing them.
