Do Ethernet ports go bad

Hi-

I have an iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. I have internet connectivity problems. Had the cable company out and they replaced the modem and the ethernet cables. I can connect to the internet on my 2 laptops connected directly to the cable modem, but when connected the same way (ethernet cable dirsct from the modem to the desktop computer) , I am not able to connect. I have not run any hardware tests or gone into the network preferences yet ( still at work) but I am wondering if the Ethernet ports ever go bad and if they do, is there a way of repairing them or do I just have to configure a different connection ( wireless or direct USB?)? Any help would be good help

If it's electronic it can go bad. There is no way to fix it on the motherboard except to replace the entire motherboard. However, you can purchase Ethernet cards for the PCI slots that can replace bad ports on the motherboard. Try Sonnettech.com.
