Continuous Disk Activity iMac

Activity Monitor is showing that me Data REad and Data Writes are spiking up. This starts as I boot up and really slows the machine down. Lots of spinning beach balls.


Is there a way of seeing what is causing the disk accesses?


In anothe forum I saw a reference to a Unix trick but I can not find it now
