How to use chat in Mail

I have an outstanding thread with lots of questions about OS X's Mail and I feel it's getting nowhere but me sking more questions in the same thread.

SO can someone explain to me how the chat function works? I CAN log onto iChat and talk with my gmail contacts...but I want to do it in Mail. Do I have to sign on to iChat? If I have to do that why not just sign onto regular gmail?

thanks!

Hi,

In Mail you can go to the View Menu > Columns and chose to Chow the Chat Bubble column.

This will then show if a Buddy is On-line if you get an Email from them.

You can use the same Menu > Customise Tool Bar and put a Chat icon in the Header (Tool Bar) section of Mail
This can then be used to Connect in iChat to a Buddy that you have the Chat info on (Of course they have to be On line)

You are probably right that it easier to do it in GMail's Web page, particularly if your Buddies are not using iChat for Video and Audio Chats.

Hi,

Thanks for the Points.

At this present time I can't get my Mail in Leopard to Show me when Buddies are On Line (Mail > Preferences > Viewing even when I double check the Addresss Book and have their email and Screen Names preset. 😢

Turning the setting Off and On will remove and Add the column that would display the marker but even when actually chatting to someone and having the Mail display an email from them I can't get it to work.

Makes it difficult to test anything and make further suggestions.

Hi,

The iChat Page can be accessed in the iChat Menu > Provide Feedback.

I just checked and my Mail has a similar option but the feedback works differently (you don't seem to be able to make/suggests Enhancement requests)

EDIT

If you deselect the Send to Apple Box you get sent to this page

Hi,

In Leopard my Dictionary is based on the New Oxford American Dictionary (from where I sit a complete misnomer)

The App does not offer Translations other than Japanese.

I can find no way to Add more Dictionaries in other languages.

I have not found any way to provide feedback.

Most likely there is some license agreement about using the Dictionary

You should provide feedback via

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

But getting a lot more dictionaries from Apple is not likely, they have to buy the rights. There are some modules available and ways to make them.

Hi Tiom,

Thanks for chipping in.

I am right in thinking that the Spellcheck that can be accessed in an App is not actually a link to the Dictionary app but to AppleSpell or CocoaSpell.

Can anything be done to say the International (Or Text) Pane in System Preferenes that can help ?

Yes, that is right, Dictionary.app has nothing to do with spell check. It's quite easy to add additional spell check dictionaries if you want.

I'm not sure what you are asking about related to the preference panes....

Aug 13, 2011 2:55 PM in response to Tom Gewecke

Hi Tom,

I am sure my thinking on this is of the fuzzy variety. 🙂

However. In Leopard there is the International Pane which you can set the Language that your computer uses.

You can also set the Keyboard input which puts the Flag icon in the Menu bar.

You can also set Formats. (Alters things like the way the date is formatted and what weight measurements you use).

I believe that this is called Text (and Something) in Lion.

My thinks went something along the lines of:-

If I change the Language does this effect the Spellcheck Dictionary is a way that would allow me (or the Original Poster) to type in one language and spellcheck in another ?

Or if i set the format differently would this make a change ?

(I know if I change Format to the United States I can SMS to US Phone Numbers On services that provide th AIM link) from over here in iChat).

I can see that there are great flaws in this thinking and one would probably need to know what the word was in the first place.

One thing that IS neat, is that OS X recognizes French words and can audo adjust. In Mail at least. I don't know how, but it's pretty nice. Which is why I never understood the lack of a French dictionary. If the thing understands the words... wha... it seems like a natural step to just put a dictionary in.

But I do understand how it would then cost money but.... there are so many dictionaries on the iOS devices that you would think it'd be a little easier.

detester - see that in Mail would highlight under in red and I could chose the correct accents - détester. now I'm curious why it's not in safari....
