Exclamation Point icon on my event

I recently moved my event folder to a new hard drive (an ordeal in itself) and I finally got things to work. However, now in my event library there is a little exclamation mark in a yellow triangle next to the event icon. What exactly does this mean? all of the media seems to be properly linked and I can't find any problems with it warranting an icon like that, but it has me nervous.

Anyone know?

FCPX 10.0.7 I too had a Yellow! triangle on an Event folder for no apparent reason. All 3 clips are working perfectly. No disconnects. But the triangle persists. None of the 3 clips were being used in the timeline - so, I moved all 3 clips to the trash, quit FCPX, emptied the trash and relaunched FCPX. The now empty Event folder still displays the Yellow! triangle . . .

Wait there's more: I had been looking at the contents of this Events folder in the FilmStrip view - no files - an empty Event folder. Then I switched to List View - a disconnected clip suddenly appeared in the "empty" Event folder. This mystery clip also had a Yellow! triangle (not a Red icon).

So, I clicked this newly discovered disconnected clip an moved it to the Trash. The Event folder is now normal - no yellow warning triangle.

I hope this helps someone.

It means that a clip used in an event or the timeline is not found. It can also be an audio only clip. You can Control-Click on the red icon in the event browser with that event selected and then choose "Reveal in Finder". This will open up a finder window with the file the clip is pointing to. Most of the time it will point to the Original Data folder of that Event in the Final Cut Pro Events folder. If the file it points to is a shortcut or alias (in Mac circles), you can then Control-Click on that file in the finder window and choose Get Info. The information window that pops up will tell you the path on your drive to (1) the shortcut you just clicked on, and (2) the location of the media file it points to. I have found that these can be also small blank clips you created to just fill in some space (industry calls this a slug). Even though FCP X has a "Placeholder Clip" to serve this purpose, some of the early adaptors might have simply created their own. If it is one of these, you might have difficulty finding it unless you zoom in closely in the areas that such "slugs" might be expected to be found. It is my understanding that the best way to move events and their files or aliases is from within FCP X. If you use Finder to move them then obviously the alias that points to a media file might be pointing to the previous location and not the new location of the media file. Best wishes.

See that's what I was thinking, but all of my media appears to be linking properly. Granted I didn't play every one, but I scrubbed through a lot of them and they worked fine and none of them are listed as "Offline"

FYI, control clicking on the icon does not let me "reveal in finder" since the icon is on the EVENT not a particular clip. Also the icon is yellow not red if that matters 🙂

That icon on your Alvin Aldridge event just simply says that within that event FCP X sees at least one clip that does not "connect" to the media file it is supposed to connect to. Daniel, please see my post a few minutes after your last post. The name of the post is about reconnecting to media files. I went through a detailed description of what I found when trying to get to the bottom of why the disconnects happen. I believe it really comes down to alias files pointing to the original locations of the actual media files when they may have subsequently been moved. At least in my own disconnects, this fixed things for me. I have seen one red icon within an event that was fixed and the yellow triangle with exclamatin mark persisted for a while. Anyway, best wishes.

I read your post, but that still doesn't seem to be the answer I'm looking for. None of my media is "disconnected". None of them have exclamations or offline icons on them. Only the event does. All of the media seems to work flawlessly. Getting info on the aliases show that they indeed are pointing to the proper place (again, didn't check EVERY file, but the few random ones I did seemed fine)

Daniel,

Thought I would revisit this one. On page 235 of the FCP X Help Manual it says the following ...

Manage media files ! Solutions to common media management issuesAlert icons

When you see red frames and a yellow alert triangle in a Timeline or Event, Final Cut Pro is alerting you that part of your project or Event is missing. There are many reasons that clips and Events, media files, and effects can be missing: moving projects and Events between computers and actively managing your Final Cut Pro Events or Projects folder usingthe Finder are two common reasons.

For more information about where Events, clips, projects, and files are located, see Where your media and project files are located.

-------------

On down that page, it then goes on to say the normal scenarios that have been discussed on this discussion. However there was one that was somewhat new to me ... that is that another program other than FCP X could have modified a media file in an event and caused this sort of icon. Supposedly that means the clip would still be represented in the event, but that FCP X would think there might be a problem there. This is all the news I have ... just thought I would throw it out there. Like you, it bugs me when I cannot explain why something is there 🙂 Best wishes.

I came under this problem. This is how I fixed it:

I noticed the exclamation point like you did, yellow not red. I navigated to the RED "offline" clip. I did a search for that clip in the finder, and reimported it into my new event. Then I simply deleted the red "offline" clip. The exclamation went away. I was worried about losing video from my project, but it was fine.

At least in my case though, the problem is there AREN'T any disconnected media files. The icon is there (which I guess indicates some files aren't connecting) but scrolling through all the clips all of them appear to be linking ok.... I've just ignored it. The icon is still there and it hasn't seemed to affect my edit at all.... but it still bugs me

I have an interesting issue. I, too, am getting the yellow triangle/exclamation point icon, but when I go to relink the files the original file that is missing is one called "filename.FinalCutCopy". I search for any file with the .FinalCutCopy extension but none are located. However, when I search for the filename I come up with the original cilp, a .mov, and the footage is there no problem.

To add to the intrigue, I only experience this when importing footage from my Canon HF 200 camcorder. When I import from my iPhone, DSLR or point n shoot, no issues.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I am running the most recent version of FCPX as of 4/27
