Upload website without ftp

Since 10.7 has dropped ftp, I am lost how to upload my site to the server.

Copying the files on the server machine directly into the website directly, first asks me for a admin PW and secondly when connecting to the site the copied files give an Apache error sayong the files are not readable.

Preferrably I copy the files to the server from a separate client mac using ... ftp ... or whatever mechanism works?

Q: please tell me how to continue.
