Q: After Lion install, Mac won't sleep (no pulsing sleep light)? This worked for me!

I know there are a plethora of suggestions out there as to how to correct the no sleep light issue since installing Lion. I tried every single one of them-- PRAM and SMC resets, looking for "little snitch" and other apps, and even trashing a preferences folder. None of them worked for me.

This is what did work. APPLE! Listen up!

1. Unplug the magsafe power cord from the computer now or in step 3.

2. Close lid to laptop.

3. Unplug magsafe power cord.

4. Wait a few seconds.

5. Watch as the sleep light begins to pulsate.

6. You can now reattach the magsafe power cord, if you'd like. It doesn't affect sleep mode for me.

After doing this, I open the lid to my MacBook and it's like old times. It takes the display a second or two to come on as it wakes from sleep. It's exactly how it should be.

I hope this helps for most if not all of you, and I hope that Apple quickly determines how to fix this problem with Lion.

Great! It works! I don't know why but it works! But...if I'm not at home and i don't have the magsafe with me I think the problem re-appears. So this is just a little fix..Apple MUST rolls out an update.

This trick worked as well for 13 inch macbook unibody with an external monitor. Macbook would not go to sleep with magsafe plugged and lid closed but goes to sleep when magsafe is not plugged in and you close the lid. Then just replug the magsafe once it's a sleep. This has got to be a bug.

Of course you can also put it to sleep with the Apple menu.

That worked like a charm.  Shame i wasted all morning switching my MBP on and off and sitting on the power button waiting and trying to reset the PMC holding all combinations of keys together like a contortionist!

    Thank you ever so much.

See my post in https://discussions.apple.com/message/16077384 -- basically I ran "pmset -g assertions" from Terminal, and it told me what was blocking the Mac from sleeping.

It doesn't quite explain why it would sleep when plugged in, vs running on battery, but in any case it solved the problem for me.

This solution works for me 99% of the time. Unplugging the macbook pro, closing the lid, then plugging it back in after 10-15 seconds.

It still takes a bit of time before the laptop is actually sleeping, but that's normal.

I really, really hope Apple releases an update that corrects this soon. It's really a pain when I need to stuff the computer into a backpack and the machine is still trying to breath fresh air when it should be sleeping.

After trying everything, read that a HP driver has caused some macs to stop sleeping.

    Thought to myself....ah ha

    Finally the bugger sleeps.

Yup, pmset -g assertions will let you know what's preventing your computer from sleeping.

As for AC vs battery, there are 3 profiles for sleep conditions - AC, battery, UPS. Use the "man pmset" command to see more details. Depending on which profile is active, different conditions may or may not prevent system sleep.

I also made a small app to help with diagnosing the problem, if anyone is interested. Source code is provided. If you don't trust it, just use "pmset -g assertions".

    Hope Apple fixes it soon.

hoongern A very big thank you for the small app and the explanation, it allowed me to find an unprinted queue on a network printer, preventing my system to sleep...

Deletyed the queue, flushed the printer and my problem went away  :-)

    Thanks again,

I'm glad that worked for you all. However, it did not work for me since I don't have a laptop. My iMac

2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB, running

Lion 10.7.2 will not go into sleep mode. The monitor will go dark, but the internal drive will not. I do not have any files stuck in the print queue, nor do I have file sharing turned on. I tried setting my energy saver to PUT HARD DISK TO SLEEEP WHEN POSSIBLE, but that didn't work either. This Mac always went to sleep with Leopard and Snow Leopard. But not now. Come on Apple. Admit this is a bug, and fix it!
