blank pdf

Hi everybody!

I am experiencing problems with viewing pdfs in Safari and Preview, as well as third party apps such as Evernote. Some pdfs open fine and as always, others will just open as an assortment of blank pages.

For example, I cannot view a single pdf from this site: http://www.swp-berlin.org/en/start-en.html. Pick any of their pdfs. Or, randomly, the newest one: http://www.swp-berlin.org/fileadmin/contents/products/comments/2011C17_bsh_janet schek_srj_ks.pdf.

Interestingly enough, I have had some of these pdf files before I migrated from a Snow Leopard MacBook to a Lion MacBook Pro, and they worked just fine.

I have also discussed this elsewhere (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3253938) but the only solution we came up with was that the files are not corrupt and that it must either be a bug or a damaged installation. (Thanks, Linc.)

Is anybody else experiencing similar problems?

I much appreciate your help.

Thank you!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Have a similar problem here. Some PDFs I cannot view in Preview but they are viewable when I open it with my very old Adobe Acrobat 5.0 via Parallels > Windows.

I was experience such issues on my iOS devices before I changed on my Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion. Whenever I received such a PDF, it was blank page on my iOS device but readable in Snow Leopard. Since Lion, iOS device and Macbook behave the same.

To make such a pdf readable, I can send the pdf file to my Mac which is still running Snow Leopard, open it (readable!), print it as PDF and send it back to my Macbook.

Just experienced the same problem with two PDF-files. Won't show on Ipad, iphone or any of my macs. All running the latest software. However, by downloading the 500 MB Acrobat Reader from Adobe my Mac displays the PDF, but no other viewer.

As a side note it's really annoying that I had to install the 500 MB Acrobat Reader to display a tiny file. Unbelieveable how large it has become.... I hope Apple can fix this bug or whatever it is.

It's pretty common for Preview to fail rendering PDF files. As Adobe releases new versions of Acrobat Pro, and users create PDFs with those new versions, Apple has to play catch-up and figure out how to render those new formats and update Preview. The latest version of Adobe's free Reader of course always works.

As a side note it's really annoying that I had to install the 500 MB Acrobat Reader to display a tiny file.

I have to ask. Where in the world are you downloading a half gig version of the free Reader from? The Mac version 11 download is only 77 MB. Installed, it takes up about 140 MB of space.

My mistake. It was 80 MB, but it was placed right below Lightroom in my download folder, which is 431 MB. :-)

However, I'm used to using Foxit Reader on my windows computer, and it's only 2 or 3 MB. Don't know what else the Adobe Reader does, but it displays PDFs that others don't display at all.

Strangely, when I downloaded the Acrobat Reader on my ipad it would not display the pdf correctly. It only worked on my imac.

I have always wondered why the Reader is so big. 🙂 But it launches decently fast and it works, so that's the one I use.

I haven't seen that yet, though we don't open very many PDF files on the iPad, so probably just haven't hit one yet. A crippled version for the iPad to keep the size down?

This thing is just coming to me on latest 10.12.1

ALso the latest iOS shows the same on the identical files.

It does affect only some PDF (with binary content).

But it affects older PDF from the same source that previously opened fine.

So I would assume it's rather an issue with MacOSX than the update to the Adobe PDF render engine?

When I monitor the logs at the time of opening the PDF, I see a bunch of strange error messages fro both the WebKit accessing keychain as well as from the kernel.
