soundsticks don't work in os x lion
SInce I upgraded to Lion, my HK Soundsticks do not appear in the Sound preference panel. These are the original USB speakers. Anyone else having this issue?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Exact same issue 😟 They just dont show in the preferences. Also, if you reboot, restart, try a powered USB port, still no joy.
I can see the SoundSticks for a few moments after a restart in the Sound Control Panel (they even emit a sound when clicking on the volume slider) but then they disappear from the list, not to reappear until after a new restart 😟
I'm having the same problem (OS X Lion - 10.7.1) with my Harman Kardon USB Soundsticks I -- they do not seem to be recognized by the OS. Any solutions yet?
I actually have the sound sticks III and have a problem using them with a new imac I5 running the latest version of lion. The III's use a 3.5mm plug into the headphone jack. I have sound and can control it from the imac but the volume buttons on the front of the satellite speaker will not work. I can plug them into my mbp I7 running safari and they work fine. Also work fine on my iphone 3gs and ipod. I think the problem is lion.
My HK Soundsticks II don't show up in the Sound Preferences panel since upgrading to Lion. I'm chiming in so Apple won't think it's isolated to just a couple people.
Add one more to the list...I dont want to pay to upgrade my speakers. They will not work with my new iMac and Lion.
Partioned my hard drive. Snow leopard & Lion. Sound sticks work in Snow Leopard. NOT in Lion. Just adding to the list.. Plugged my ipod into sound sticks and they worked fine. Appears to be a problem with Lion.
I have the same issues with the orginal Soundsticks. I have gotten them to work by unpluging the USB connection and rebooting. Sometimes it takes a couuple of times and I have even changed the USB port but eventually, I can get them to work. I can't isolate the exact routine but it seems to be related to un plugging and replugging the USB connection and rebooting.
me too, I would never have suspected. I've got to dig up my snow leopard discs and revert back.
My USB Sound Sticks do work on my iMac 27" under Lion 10.7.2, but they are never used as the default speakers. So each time the iMac is restarted or booted, the built-in speakers are used and I have to switch back to the sound sticks.I'm sending a bug report to Apple.
Soundsticks stopped working with Leopard and Snow Leopard years ago... some people can still get it to work. This has been all over the internet for many years and HK just says that is all up to Apple. We all know they work perfectly some of the time. (which means to me... that they could work ALL the time) Apple, I guess, dosen't want to fix it. No profit in making great old equipment work through upgrades.
This link is the best way to get this info to Apple engineers:
Thanks Allan, I sent in the report. Silly me... forever the optimist. Why bother...
After upgrading to 10.7.3 my Soundsticks stopped making, well, sound. They still show in the preferences panel, but they remain totally silent (which they did not before the upgrade). Hope to get them back again (and filed a bug report with Apple as well).
No problem here on my iMac. The Soundstick still works under MacOX 10.7.3. But like before: after restarting the Mac, the SoundSticks are never the default USB device anymore, like this was the case up to 10.6.8.
