Updated Printer Drivers Not Installing - Brother HL-2170W

Try deleting the printer from Print & Scan Prefs, deleting the /Library/Printers/Brother folder and reinstalling the sfotware. It might be necessary to restart, but you should be able to add the printer after this.

1) deleted the printer, as you said.

2) installed the driver from apple

3) restarted computer

4) it works.

I did exactly what was recommended but am having the same problem as before. Is there a way to point the installer the downloaded disk image instead of searching for it on the internet?

Unfortunately I think it made everything worse. Now I can't even get the printer to show up in the "Nearby Printers" section and have no idea where to go from here. I've been working on this since for almost four hours now. I don't know why it would be so hard to just have an option to point the updater to a file instead of trying to download it. That option would have saved me a half-day of productivity (and probably a full day by the time I get it figure out).

Resetting the printing system worked for me.

Go to the printers & scan control panel in your system preferences and right click the printer list view. Select reset printing system and add the printer again.

This also fixed my problem with a new Epson Stylus NX430. The error message I had been receiving was the same as the original poster's. Your step unfortunately had the effect of removing my OTHER, still-functioning printer from the list, too, but I guess that's easy enough to put back if needed. Anyway, thank. Yours was the first suggestion that worked, and quickly, while the other 5 or 6 things I tried didn't work and wasted hours of time not working.

I had a similar problem with a Canon i9900. Everything seemed to insatll but could not get anything to print. I did not know about resetting the printing system. This fixed my problem entirely. Thank you jManMUC!

I, too, had the same problem with my brother and hp printers. When I reset the printer settings, it worked beautifully. I did still have to download the latest driver for the brother printer, but all is well 🙂 Thanks so much!

John Blanchard's fix worked. OMG this printer is great when it works, but whenever I need to set up the wireless its a nightmare.
