Cannot load Flash Player

Adobe Flash Player 10 has mysteriously disappeared from my G4 Powerbook running 10.4.11. There was a similar query by notanthony123 on April 13, 2011, (Adobe Flash Player for OSX 10.4.11) with a number of responses. I have tried all the suggestions from that discussion. In all attempts to install Flash Player 10 I am left only with a Flash Player alias. When I tried to install Flash Payer 9, I was told “You cannot continue. There is nothing to install.” I have searched my hard drive and can find no Flash Player program, only aliases.

I would very much appreciate any help, as I don’t know what to try next.

Hi Ted,

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):

Download this if you haven't...

Once downloaded if it doesn't unzip automatically the double click on that file.

Look for the fp10.1.102.64_and_9.0.289.0archive folder, open it, look for the Flash Player 10.1.102.64 folder & open and look for 101r10264 folder & open it, double click on the flashplayer101r102_64_ubmac.dmg file, choose the Install Adobe Flash Player file to install... they don't make it easy!

Thank you for your lengthy reply. I successfully wentthrough all the steps, except the wimpyplayer. The first few links ended upproducing only a Flash Player alias. One of the two Dropbox links did end upwith Flash Player.app v10.1 r82 inmy applications folder. Unfortunately, when I tried to open a file thatrequires Flash Player I was told that “--requires Flash 8.0 or newer”, and “Click here to Download Flash.” Thedownload was for the “Intel” version. (With wimpyplayer I was only able to playmusic.)

Do I need to place the Flash Player.app somewhere else? Isthere anything else I can try or could it be that my seven year old, much usedcomputer needs to be retired or, at the very least, reformatted, with 10.5.

Sorry for the long de;ay in getting back to you.

I did. Flash Player is in the applications folder, and Flash Player.app info shows all the appropriate details, as far as I know. I do not know beforehand which actions I take require Flash Player for completion but I still am being asked for a newer version at certain times. It may be working fine other times but I don't know how to tell.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. There are two versions of FlashPlayer. The most common works with your Internet browser and comes as an installer application. When you mount the .dmg file that was downloaded you will probably see an un-installer application which you should normally run first to clean out anything that could conflict with a new installation. Then run the installer application which will put the appropriate files into your Internet Plug-Ins folder. At this point there should not be a FlashPlayer application in your Applications folder at all.

As a couple of people have told your, there is also a FlashPlayer stand-alone application which can only be used to play flash files that you download to your computer. They should have file extensions of either .flv or .swf. Most people will never need this application and for the few who do to view things like help videos, the developer usually provides it in his package.

If you want to be able to view flash in your browser you need the plug-in, not the application.

On a G4 you may not be able to play all the latest Flash videos.

The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:

In the past four days I have repeated much of what I hadalready done. Uninstalled Flash Player, which appeared to work better thanpreviously as there was no FP icon in my applications folder afterward, andthen reinstalled FP with dropbox. FP now seemed to work with Firefox, which ithadn’t before the last FP installation, but was still inactive with Safari.Because it looked as if this was probably a problem with Safari and not FP, Idid an archive and install of OS 10.4.11. It didn’t help; Firefox is OK, Safariis not.

Any more ideas? I am willing to try most anything, althoughI can use Firefox for those places where FP not required and Safari foreverything else.

I thank everyone for their help; all of you are a great assetto us not so knowledgeable persons.

I went through yoursuggestions with the following results:

1. Flash Test:

Safari:

No test appears? Verify plugin

“Small flash applet shouldappear below, "About" should list

Version 8.0.22 or better.

if no flashplug-in appeared, flash is not enabled for your

browser.

Following Flash Speed Test FAQ/It won’t load gives:

“Please verifythat you have flash browser plugin

version8 orabove: Verify flash plugin.”

I feel as if I am goingaround in a circle but tried the

other twosuggestions.

Foxfire: everything fine

2 Flash version in each browser:

Version; Safari, no version given only the latest version,

10.3.183.5, shown in table.

Firefox: Mac 10,1,82,76

3. Test Adobe Shockwave andFlash Player

Safari: Nothing showing under Adobe Shockwave Player

Under AdobeFlash Player; Test your Adobe Flash Player

Installation brought up

Firefox: everything fine

Well, OK, it is installed & Firefox knows about it.

Do you have a need for Safari, not sure why Safari isn't seeing it or using it.

A couple of people have told you this, but let me try to make it clearer for you. Your PPC Mac cannot run the latest version of Flash 10.3 at all. You must download and install version of 10.1 or below (I believe the latest is 10.1.102.64) if you want to use Safari.

Firefox has Flash built in to it. In your case it's an older version which has security issues, but my guess is that the one I mentioned probably does, as well.

Not really, Firefox comes with Flash built in, usually older than the most recent available. You cannot install the latest versions of Flash on a PPC Mac.

Thanks Ted, still wondering why the latest PPC version didn't install, but I prefer FF over Safari 10 to one, especially with the add-ons available. 🙂
