Corrupted iTunes Library

My iTunes library seems to have become corrupted, and I want to replace it with a backup copy on my external hard drive. I emailed Apple, and they told me it can't be done. Instead, the library has to be recreated. Does anyone know if this is really true? Is there a simpler way? What's the point of exporting the library if you can't use it as a backup?
