If you have a memory stick then you might be able to transfer the photos via a card reader connected to the camera connection kit (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE&mco=MjE4ODE2ODk), but not all readers work so you may need a a powered reader. The kit only officially supports SD cards and camera to iPad direct transfer.

In terms of the photos on your computer then you connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes, select it on the left-hand side and then select its Photos tab on the right (similar to how you sync other content to the iPad). There is more info here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236 . You need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together, as not including photos in a subsequent sync is how you delete them from the iPad.

I transfer photos from my memory sticks to my iPad 2 using the camera connection kit connected to a powered USB hub connected to a small IoGear card reader.

The USB hub doesn't have a visible brand, but it's small ( slightly larger than a business card) and I've had it for a few years. The CCK, hub, power cord and card reader all fit into a small mesh bag. I find this setup more convenient than having to deal with various camera USB cords.
