How do I insert Greek characters from the character viewer in Lion?

In Lion, the Character Viewer shows many more options for different characters than SL. Of course, it displays Latin, but, as I scientist I often need to insert Greek characters, but I cannot find Greek characters in the Character Viewer. I don't otherwise need to select Greek as a language. Inserting Greek characters from some applications like MS Word still works.

And ... while I'm here ... what happened to the "insert" button? -j

I commonly forget about the "option" key and inserting from the keyboard. In any case, except that the letters usually correspond (like "a" for "å" hmmm ... that doesn't work either ... I wanted to find "alpha"). Obviously the Greek characters are hard to find from the keyboard.

In any case, a Greek pallette is missing from the Character Viewer ... from there I think that you can click to insert ... if you can find it. -j

I used greek fonts when I was doing my masters studies. Currently I use them when I teach biblical and language classes. I accessed Greek fonts in the same manner as when I had OS X Tiger.

Open System Preferences

Click on Language & Text

Click on Input Sources

Click the box by Greek or Greek Polytonic

Click the "Allow a different for each document" and "Show input menu in menu bar" at the bottom of the window.

Click the American flag in the menu bar at the top of the screen and a Greek flag will take the place of the American flag. You now have greek fonts instad of english. To switch back simply click the flag again and choose the American flag.
