New Imac fully updated Lion install. The Mirgration assistant seems to be working perfectly on the XP machine! On the new Imac the assistant is stuck on the "Select Items to Transfer" window with the note "Inspecting your Computer" and never gives the option of what to transfer from the XP machine. Thanks for your help!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518

Are you referring to the OS X Migration Assistant or to the Windows Migration Assistant? See Windows Migration Assistant for Lion.

Thanks Eric, I have followed all previous recommendations on correctly transferring from PC to Mac. Still stuck after following the instructions.

Kappy, this is the Migration Assistant on the new Imac that is having the problem. As i mentioned, i was supprised that the XP Assistant seems to be ready to transfer and it is the Mac Migration assistant that is stuck at the "Select Items to Transfer" window with the note "Inspecting your Computer" screen. the Mac Assistant never moves to selecting the user on the Xp Machine to select the files that you want to import.

    thanks for your help!

How did you backup your windows data? Did you copy the data on a external hard drive?  How was the drive formatted?  You should try just dragging and dropping your files from the windows backup to your Mac.

I am using the migration assistant from apple on the xp machine and it seems to be doing everything correctly. Both the mac and pc see eachother, the secure code shows up and the MA(migration assistant) finds the files on the pc and states that it is waiting for the Mac MA to go to the next step. of course the Mac Lion MA just sits there on Inspecting never allowing to choose the files to transfer. This is a fresh out of the box mac on 10.6 and newly upgraded to Lion. Fixed prefrences on the mac and are booting from the Administrator account.

I have seen this problem a few times with my clients and the simple solution is as I stated above to copy the files to a external hard drive and transfer your files from the drive.  Just as a side note the Windows to Windows transfer are about 50% successful for me when connecting two machines together.

Are you saying that there is an ability to export these files using the Apple Migration Assistant by Apple to an external drive or just that instead of using the assistant on the windows machine do it al manually? Kind of takes away the built in ability to transfer automatically???

Hi did you find a solution for this issue? I am having the same problem; exactly as you have described the Mac is stuck on "Select Items to Migrate" inspection...

    Any advisement appreciated.

Hi there, I am having a similar problem. My does it all perfect even to the point where it is sucessfully transfering files. It then gives me a estimate on how long is left and the it just stops working and says that it has lost and it is waiting for the windows PC.

    What the h e l l.

Any ideas or is just a load of crap and manually is the only way.

If so can someone tell me how I manage to do itunes so I can just plug my phone in on the new machine and it wont change anything on my phone. I mean the same as if I plugged it to windows comp, itunes already knows what gos on it etc and what to delete. Will apple do this and how.

I bought a new iMac yesterday and began the process of transferring applications and settings (not files) from my MacBook to my new iMac using the migration assistant. The screen prompt indicated it would take more than 17 hours to transfer data. I started it at 12:30 am and when I checked it at 11:30 am it said it had 11 hours and 52 minutes more to go. I checked it an hour later and it said the same thing. Obviously the program stalled at some point during the night so I stopped the transfer on my MacBook but can't seem to stop it on my new iMac. I tried control escape, and even shut it off but when I turn it back on it still shows the transfer screen with "11 hours and 52 minutes remaining." Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do next?

Same problem: destination PC = out of the box MacBook Pro, source PC: Sony Vaio Notebook with Windows XP.

MA starts up fine, connects, select file works, and then, as soon as it says "transferring xyz" (in this case transferring music...) MA gets stuck.

I have disabled "automatic update" on the Windows laptop (one of the recommended steps for migration, as no other programme should be open during the process), made sure that no programme except for XP and OS and MA were running on both machines.

As both machines were connected via WiFi, perhaps the firewalls need to be turned off too ?

I will try that next but given earlier comments in this and other threads I have my doubts it will work.

In any event, MA must be poorly designed and certaily the accompanying help notes leave much to be desired.
