Zero Byte files after Rename

I have a new MacBook Air with Lion 10.7 and have copied all of my data over from Windows XP via a WD USB hard drive (formatted FAT32).

I have started renaming the files in the Mac Finder now to tidy them up, typically making them start with a capital letter (eg "mac os hints.rtf" renamed to "Mac os x hints.rtf") and they go to Zero bytes and hence corrupt !!!

What is going on please?

After hours of testing, found out what causes files to go to zero bytes after they are renamed.....

It only happens when Time Machine setting is turned on. Must be something to do with the new "versions" feature. If you turn Time Machine off, the corruption does not occur.

Apple - please fix this... Time Machine is supposed to protect us not destroy our data.
