Replace Intel Xserve RAID card by SATA (non-raid) controller.

Hi,

I have a Intel 2.8 xserve with the RAID card. It looks like the RAID card is defective as the Xserve starts and shows the folder icon with a question mark.

As I don't use the xserve anymore professionally but want to use it personally for streaming videos and storing copies of my DVD's and CD's I am thinking about replacing the RAID card by the normal SATA controller.

However I can find a lot on replacing the SATA by RAID controller, but can't find anything on the other way around.

Especially I want to know where to find the SATA controller, price, part # etc and instructions on replacing. However I assume the instrunctions are the same as replacing the SATA by the RAID.

Any help on part#?

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi Perry,

It's not too difficult to do.. The SATA backplane can be bought from Apple or found on ebay occasionally the P/N is 661-4648. You'd need to download the RAID card install instructions or RAID card battery replacement instructionsand follow them. The only difference being you'd remove the battery and replace the RAID with the SATA backplane. I might have a couple of the backplanes somewhere so will have a look.

here is the link http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Xserve_RAID_Card_Battery_DIYInstructions.pdf

Also emember that you'll most likely need to reformat the drives you currently have installed in your xserve. Are these Apple drives?

All the best
