There is no sound output from either internal or external speakers in the finder or any application. Sound is turned on in System Prefs and volume is maxed, but would not test there in sound effects. I just installed 10.6.8 update, reset PRAM, repaired the disk and permissions, and reset to factory defaults, none of which brought back sound. This started a few days ago when the Apple chime would not sound on startup but sound would work after startup. Now nothing. The Apple chime did sound (three times) when resetting PRAM so the speakers are working. I'm stumped.

Thanks for your attention and help on this.

This problem was corrected by turning off all muting in the Audio MIDI Setup utility in the Utilities applications folder. I had never heard of the MIDI Setup until doing a Google search yesterday. I have no idea how muting got turned on in the MIDI Setup since I had never been there.

I hope this fix proves useful to others.

This doesn't do anything for me at all. Periodically when the computer wakes from sleep the sound ceases to work, no amount of juggling settings does anything at all. The microphone appears to be working, as I can see the levels responding when looking at the sound preferences.

So far the only thing that has worked in the past is to totally restart the computer. A real pain in the hiney.

I appear to turn up the sound all the way. Visually it looks as if it is working because the little icon with the speaker appears on screen and the number of squares goes up and down properly. But there is just no sound. There's no little red light in the audio jack to indicate it thinks it is still being used as a headphone jack either. Sometimes that is the case where it gets confused if you unplug headphones from the jack.

So even after turning the sound all the way 'up' and getting nothing, I restart, and when the system comes up and I can turn up the sound, it starts ALL THE WAY down at the bottom of the scale. So it's definitely getting confused about something.

My experience is similar to terriergal. I find that when I put my iPhone 4S (running iOS 5.0.1) into silent mode using the switch on the side, whenever I turn the switch off I lose all sound. I also frequently lose sound when, instead of putting the phone into siltent mode, I turn the volume all the way down. When I turn the volume back up there is no sound. Like terriergal the only way to get the sound back is to reboot the phone.

Sorry. When I've researched this before it seems to be a common problem. I thought I wouldn't need much explainning. There seems to be 1000's of people unable to get their sound back. I have had no sound for about 6 months now. It all started after I plugged in headphones. The ipad thinks thety are still there, and says headphones inserted. However after searching the internet for solutions, changing all the sound settings and reinstalling IOS several times, nothing seems to work, not even external speakers. Do you think sending it to apple UK would solve the issue, can we do such a thing anyway, is there a repair shop?
