Why doesn't the iPhone support FM Radio

Because Apple has decided, for whatever reasons, not to do so. There are plenty of FM apps in the app store.

All anyone here can say is "because Apple didn't include that feature". No one from Apple's product design groups will respond to such questions. You can suggest it to Apple is you wish via their feedback pages:

I'm not aware of many smartphones from any vendor that come with FM radio tuners built in, so this doesn't seem to be an unusual decision on Apple's part.

Nobody knows why the iPhone doesn't have a FM radio, maybe it just isn't a feature that many people would like. All we know is, its not listed here: Apple - iPhone 4 - Size, weight, battery life, and other specs.

But, you can buy them from Apple online -> Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter.

Go back and read the description. That's not an FM tuner to play FM radio on the iPhone. It's a transmitter so that you can play an iPhone in the car, by broadcasting to the car's FM radio.

Both my HTC Incredible and my HTC Thunderbolt had built in FM radios. They don't work very well, though. You have to use headsets as the headsets provide the antenna. Given the poor quality, I'm not surprised Apple didn't bother.

In addition to reception issues, according to a survey by Mark Ramsey Media, of the 17% of smartphone users that say their phone has an FM radio only 14% say that they use it a few times a week or more. So I'd wager that Apple just didn't find much business justification for including an FM radio.

There's not a whole load of empty space available inside there, you know... 😉

It would also add to the cost of the iPhone, which given the apparently low use of FM radios in those smartphones that have one would not seem to make much business sense for Apple. Companies add features to increase sales, and the iPhone seems to be selling quite well as it is.

There's more space inside a Nano?

You're arond five months late to the party, but the Nano idoes not also contain a general purpose computer as the iPhone effectively does.

Or all the circuitry required for cellular service. That includes both the chips and the antenna. Or a battery large enough to support the cellular service and the larger screen. So yeah, lots more room.
