Is my hard drive fried?

I'm on my last leg.

When I try turning my laptop on, I hear the fan start like it's going to start up, then I hear a quiet beep noise and it stops.

This happened after I let my laptop sit on my coffee table for the night (in sleep mode).

Did my laptop overheat? Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I need a new hard drive but before I replace it I was just curious to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Thanks!

I will try retrieving things off the hard drive if it's toast (with an external USB enclosure).

If the new hard drive doesn't work either, I guess then I'll take it into the Apple store (the closest one to me is 7 hours away). A new hard drive costs about as much as it would to talk to someone thru Apple Support anyways!

I've had this laptop now for almost 3 years without a single problem, now this...

Sometimes, if the hard drive fails badly enough, it can apparently compromise the machine's ability to boot from any system at all. I've never actually seen it happen, but have heard of it happening. That could be what has happened to you. I'd recommend buying and installing a new hard drive, and see if that fixes it. Worst case scenario, it doesn't help anything and you'll have wasted the money on the hard drive... except that money spent on a hard drive is never truly wasted, since you can just put it in an enclosure and make it part of your backup system. Most people don't have enough backups anyway.

Of course, that advice is based on certain assumptions that may not be valid, so take it for what you paid for it! 😉

I've tried this already 😟 At first, I was hoping that it was an easy fix like replacing the battery, a dead battery, or my charger not working. I've also tried resetting the SMC.

My sister has a MPB so I will use her hard drive to troubleshoot my computer. I will post what happens so that it can help someone in the future with the same problem.

Okay, that's your choice, but understand that a logic board dying for no reason is extremely unusual with Apple hardware. I've been using Apple hardware since 1984, and the only time that hardware has failed me* was with a laptop I dropped on a concrete floor.

* Other than hard drives, none of which are actually manufactured by Apple and which can and do die all the time, due to the nature of the technology.
