Find a particular radio station in iTunes?

Is there a way to search for a particular radio station in iTunes? I want to find one that I like listening to without having to go to its website and opening RealPlayer or other media players. The search bar is grayed out in iTunes in the list of radio stations. Thanks.

There is a way to make the radio stations in iTunes searchable, but it does require some initial work on your part. You can apply this technique generally (include all stream categories in the searchable set), or narrowly (create a selected set of the available stations, including only that sub-set of streams suited to your tastes i.e. if you never listen to country or metal, you can exclude all of the stations in those categories when you create a searchable set of stations).

I'm using a much older version of iTunes, as this machine is still running Tiger, but the idea is probably generalizable to more recent systems.

Open iTunes, and create a New Playlist (Command-N, or select that command from the File menu);

- name that new playlist something like 'Searchable Radio';

- select the "Radio" item in the Library section of iTunes' sidebar;

- open the first/next item in the list of Streams (e.g. "Adult Contemporary") by clicking on the disclosure triangle to the left of the category name;

- click on the first item in the sub-list thus exposed;

- scroll down, using the scroll bar or other means, to the last item (i.e. station) in the sub-list and Shift-click on that item;

- having selected several hundred items (streams, in fact, the number of which will be displayed in the bottom-centre of the window), move the pointer to a location other than where you shift-clicked, then mouse down on the selection and immediately drag the selection to the playlist you've created for this purpose;

- after a short pause, verify that the technique described above has worked by switching to a display of the contents of your playlist ('Searchable Radio') by selecting it in the sidebar and verifying that the number of items in 'Searchable Radio' has increased;

- return to the "Radio" listing of streams and close the category currently open (and from which you've copied the entire list into 'Searchable Radio'); and,

- go through each of the stream categories (the second might be "Alternative Rock"), one at a time, sequentially and systematically, repeating the algorithm above until you've selected and then drag-and-dropped all the radio stations you care ever to search through onto the 'Searchable Radio' playlist item in the side bar.

Once you've done this, the playlist 'Searchable Radio' should hold several thousand items*. Thereafter, to search for a radio station, select the 'Searchable Radio' playlist in the sidebar, then type an identifying word or number into the search field found in the upper right corner of the iTunes window. From the 'results' list displayed for your search criterion, you can either double-click an item to open that radio stream immediately, or drag the item to the sidebar to have ready access to that item in future.

*While the completed 'Searchable Radio' playlist is displayed you might want to toggle the checkbox of all items: to do so, Command-click on any box and the status of the checkbox will change for all items in the playlist.

SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR DUMMIES.

To be able to make a Radio Station Searchable, Find a Radio Station

This only works if the Radio Station decided to give you good info to search for in the first place.

Open Individual Radio "Category"

Shift Click to Select all items on that list

Add to a New Playlist

Now that they are all on a playlist, they are searchable

Yep, Time consuming, but searchable.
