In 10.5, when you selected a folder in a stack, it would automatically open that folder in a new finder window. Now, with 10.7, when you select a folder in a stack, it opens the folder still within the stack. This creates an additional step. I then need to select "open in finder." How can I make the stack behave like I am used to?

Is it the 'Always open folder in a new window' option in Finder Preferences? I don't use that so mine is not ticked:

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it does not help for the stacks (and strangely did not seem to change any of the finder behaviors).

Interesting. I have folders in the dock (these viewed as a stack) and their sub-folders open in a new finder window, which is what you want, right? I also have folders in the dock (these viewed as a folder) and they exhibit the behavior you mention.
So. Do you really mean "stack"? Maybe not. Try control clicking on your folder in the dock and changing the view to "stack" . See if that doesn't work for you.

I have already tried changing the viewing between stack and folder and it doesn't change the behavior.

Wow. So, if there is any rationality left, some setting differs between our two machines that could resolve your issue. In that same control-click view, I also have sort by name, view content as "Automatic". You too?

Hold the option-command key-click your Folder

If you put your stack in "List" view you will be able to browse all folders, OR click on the folder itself to open it in a finder window.
